Let the Metal Start Flying!

Here's a picture of the Hudson I just moved inside the shop today! This is the first time this car has seen the inside of a garage in over 30 years!

Let's hope it's not another 30 before it comes back out :D

I have a lot to do to the shop, but that will have to happen over time.

Currently I'm still needing to hook up air and heat before I can start working on the car - my heater died and I'm trying to upgrade my compressor - 'but it's nice and dry for now!

Of course I did go and find a nice used hot-tub to get hooked up first! Best Money I've spent in a long time! Any of you old farts out there with aches and pains should get one if you don't have one!

  • Don't be greedy with that space. Turn the car the other way.

    Hey Dan,
Glad to see you got it inside out of the elements. It makes all the difference in the world. Guess I had better get busy on mine just to stay up with you now that you have that nice place to work in.
    Peace,
    Chaz

It does look a little tight depth wise. Can't wait to see the progress :)

Hence my suggestion. :D But it does look like someone has made some serious tracks in getting that space cleared and organized. Must have been Rambo. What a good dog.

Yeah, I knew the width was going to be an issue 22ft is too short really. the Commodore barely fits without the front end sheet metal and bumpers!

Nothing is really setup yet and will still be moving some things around...until you actually start working a shop it's hard to know where things will end up.

Let that be a lesson to anyone building a shop...25ft width min!

Thanks - but Rambo dog was NO help! All he wants to do is run through the shop and play!

My back finally healed up - and I've been able to do a "full court press" the last few days to finally make some headway...

I'm going to look at a compressor tonight - I'll see if its worth the money for an upgrade!

Come on, admit it, Rambo's always a help. And what do you do in the shop but run (make that walk) and play? Dogs are good for the mind and soul. Didn't you mention getting a hot tub recently? Park that back in there and hit the jets and bubbler. While a compressor is nice, get some heat going first or any moisture in it will freeze.

Working on the heat situation...But I am going to get the compressor I looked at last night...

5hp Devilbiss, 220-v single phase 2-stage w/80 gal tank and a pressure pot blaster for 750.00!

  • That's a pretty darn good deal, where do I sign up?
  • Rambo, you'll be happy with the TIP 99'er (and the larger compressor). Been using the same model for about 10 years now. (Even let the "kid" use it, and it still works!) TIP doesn't sell the ceramic tips for it anymore, but they're available aftermarket and I bought three spares at Carlisle last Fall.

    Craigslist...

I've been monitoring CL for some time, looking for a nice compressor.

Weird thing was that I was finding a lot of nice used 3phase setups but not many 1phase.

I also wasn't looking for the blaster - but hey, I'll take it!

That's good to know...the guy I'm buying the TIP from said he found some online. The blaster looks like a nice setup and I may just tackle the remainder of the sandblasting here at home with this setup!

He's giving me about 6 extra tips, sand, hood, hoses, etc...

I really like Craigslist, pictures and bartering with local people.

Eveyone I have dealt with has been fair and nice to deal with...a complete 180 from my dealings on EPay...er...Ebay

With the new shop (complete with house) and tools, we're expecting you to have that car on the road by summer. :D

With that rig you ought to able to do some blasting pretty efficiently. I have an older blaster that is about 1/2 that size and a 7.5 hp compressor. The compressor keeps up well, but I have to refill the sand a bit too often to be convenient. I can do a wheel or two between sand refills.

I also have had really good experiences on Craigslist. Bought and sold lots of stuff on there with zero issues.

It didn't seem too bad when I heard it running. My oiless compressor is louder than this big one!

Does yours have the aluminum head or cast iron? I wonder if that makes a difference in the noise?

They sure don't make newer garages with shop use in mind anymore. They barely fit new cars much less antique classics. Not too practical. 25 ft is luxurious! LOL
