I have a complete Hudson engine, with clutch ,transmission, carb, dist, starter, ect. It appears to be a 3x5, 40's vintage. How can you idenitify the year ? The head is on the engine.

What's the engine number? I believe that the engine numbers and body numbers were identical after 1938 (according to Alex Burr's Hudson Handbook), and if so, it should be easy to I.D. the engine from the number. Also, some engine numbers are known for earlier Hudson engines.

The engine number, I believe, is stamped on the boss at the front side of the engine block, up near the top (where the head meets the block).

Another indicator of year: the distributor moved from the side of the block to the head, in....was it 1940?

Technically, Wandering Jon is correct - from mid-year 1938 up engine number and serial numbers were the same.

That said, however, they didn't add the model number to the engine number.

In the serial number the ID is, for example, 41-14434 - being a 1940 Super Six (41) with a serial number of 14434. So 14434 would be on the block. But, so would 14434 be stamped on the block from, say, a 1942 Super Six with a serial number of 22-14434.

I think you are correct, Jon, on the loacation of the distributor on a 1940 engine. 1941 up was somewhere else, that I can't think of off the top of my head - but somebody will come up with the correct answer.

The distributor is on the rear of the head. The head says"Power Dome"; There is a casting number by the oil filler # 165670 GWC; Could not find any other numbers anywhere else, used a wire brush on the area around the front and sides of the head, and could find no stamped numbers. The engine is about as long as a Jet motor or shorter.

I have a 42 on the rack here sans head and exhaust manifold

    .

The munber is stamped directly into the deck in 3/8 high characters between the exhaust manifold and the head half way between the front 2 ports, and read from the right side.

That area is normally pretty cruddy and would have to be cleaned up to read it.

Yep, Thanks Uncle Josh, found the number. One Small problem, half the number is covered by the exhaust manifold! Carburetor number is 438s ,which states in the 1943 Motor Manual, that its from a 1937 model,90,92.(Whatever that is!) Starter motor number is MZ4079A , which in the 1952 Motor Manual lists as for the 1940 6. Which 6, it doesn't specify. The joy of Hudson identification!
