Engine Knock Update
Pulled the pan yesterday and found some shiny brass specks and a filling or two. The metal bits were confined to the rear of the engine and in fact went up the passenger side of the pan. I measured the play in the in the rod caps and they ranged from .005 to .016. Then pulled the rod caps and looked at each bearing….all looked real good with only very slight polishing at the outer edges. Nothing on the rods can account for the metal bits. Checked the brass gear for the oil pump…everything looks good there also and there were no metal bits in the front of the pan at all. Looked at the cam in the block and could see no metal bits anywhere near it. Looks like the next step is to pull the crank and check the main bearings. From what I can tell this is starting to look like a cracked crank. I guess the only way to tell is to pull it and take it to a shop….Darn. I guess since I have forged pistons and everything I should stick with the stroker crank? Is there an off the shelf puller for the front and rear mains? Or do I need to make my own? Oh, Perry it looks like you were right the noise was being telegraphed to the front of the engine. I will give you a call tonight for further consultation.

Easy to make your own with a U-shaped piece of angle iron, with a hole in the middle and a long screw and nut pulling a flat plate with 2 small screws threaded into the cap.0

I dont see how it could be cracked if it has been stroke. They would of caught it then when welding. Usually between 5 and 6 shafts is the crack but mostly rare to occur.
Filings are mostly debris left from rebuilding. How does the lifters & lobes of the cam look? Also check the lobe on the fuel pump. I would look there before taking it out0 -
lifter and lobes look great, no scoring or marks at all. Checked the oil pump gear and it looks to have even wear on all teeth. At first I thought it was the oil pump but there were no metal bits in the pan below the pump at all. that was clean. The rear of the engine has metal bits adhearing to the passanger side of the pan and along the block wall. It looks like the were flung there by the rotation of the crank throwing oil and material. Now the front and rear mains were sealed with silicone and not the wadding. I don't see that that would be a problem unless there was an oil issue. I just can't sea any way around pulling the mains. I have not done the plastic guage yet but guess I may have to if the mains don't show anything. but there is just to much metal for this to be cleanup from the rebuilding. But I am guessing at this.

By the way the advice on this form is great. please don't think I am *****ing at the previous builder. I am learning a lot fron this experance although there may be a less costly way of getting this education.
