Engine Knock Update...part something
Well the crank was magnafluxed and no cracks were found that could cause the noise. I pulled the head and there was no sign of any problems or anything hitting the head. Plenty of clearance all around. What the crank guy did say is that there may be a problem with the dampener. Something about the snout and the keyway not looking quite right. Has any one else had issues? The engine has a new Fisher ballancer or someone's aluminum double pulley system on it. Should I look at putting the old cast iron beast on? I am taking the new dampener, flexplate, and hardware in and have the entire thing checked for balance. It does make sense that there may be a problem with the dampener as that noise was the loudest, right in front down by the front seal, but I have never heard of dampener going bad and making noise. When it was running there was no wobble that I could see. Any thoughts are greatly welcome.

Longshot: Are you running an electric fuel pump with an old mechanical one still bolted in place? They can break internally and slap as the cam passes by.0

I don't know the details......but, when I hear the work "knock" I first think of rods. Since the bottom end is OK, then piston slap is on top of the list. Please tell me more.
Have a nice day

Hi Jay,---Years ago my 37 Hudson 8 developed a knock that sounded just like a rod but in reality turned out to be nothing more than a loose vibration dampener. I bet this is your problem also. Hope this helps.---Cliff Minard.0

Had dampner loosen on the crankshart on a 49 262 just enough to make a knock like a rod. It did some damage to the key-way and I finally had to use loc-tite to keep it from working loose again. That's where your knock is more than likely comeing from if the key-way is a little damaged. It doesn't take much to make it sound bad.

Thanks for the replys, the last two are giving me hope. After checking everything and it all looking good I was getting worried I was imagining it all. Now that I think about it the dampner came off very easy. Well I hope to put it back together this weekend. Maybe by next week I will have good news and have the car back on track for the Nationals and the Albright award.

Seen the same thing happen to a Subaru, loose crank pulley, bad sound, ruined keyway. Except the guy driving is half deaf and 3/4 ignorant, and ruined the crank. Pulled the pulley off and started it and it sounded fine. Too bad for him the labor and parts to replace the crank was the same cost as a lower mileage used motor. Wait, maybe it was good for him.0

Are you using an aftermarket or Chrysler electronic distributor? I am using a chrysler / six, had a knock sounding very much like rod or main bearing. Contrary to what I read you must limit total advance or you can get that noise, showed up on tip in. I did my limiting by compairing the two distributors side by side and welding on a stop for the advance plate. No more noise. Hudsonly Lou Cote0
