Experience with Stepdown 6v Pertronix ignition?

I have had trouble with having enough voltage while cranking that first time cold in the morning to get the ignition to fire. Voltage drops to 4.9-5 volts at that time. Anyone else have good or bad experience to share? Would love to eliminate point maintenance.

  • Had mine in for a year. Zero trouble and I can start it cold no problems. When I installed mine I got the matching coil and wires from Pertronix.

By your response I am assuming that pertronix actually has 6volt coils? Yes, No? I didn't see 6volt coils on there Website. Maybe I missed them

  • The correct coil is the PNX 40011 1.5 Ohm coil and the wire kit is PNX 708180.

Thanks for the feedback. Gives me the energy to go on with it. What spark plug gap do you use with the Pertronix?

  • 32 thou works like a charm for me....
  • Your problem is the battery. Is it old? Try charging it and then start the car. If battery is low on volts, when you hit the starter it draws the juice away from the coil. I installed 3 batteries last week just for that problem. Make sure you are charging at least 30 amps and 6.7 to 7.2 volts.
