Drag Racing July 28, 2007 HET Nationals
First thing: Can the moderator please make this a sticky thread that will stay around.
I spoke to the mangement of Muncie Drag Way and have set up a Drag Racing class for Hudsons only on July 28th, 2007 which is the saturday of the HET Nationals.
Below is the basic information and more will follow over the next several months:
1) The only condition is that we need to have 10 Hudsons show up for this to ba a Hudson only class.
2) We will be running 1/8 mile with a standard staggered tree, which use to be called a .500 no-box tree.
3) There is no time cutoff so any Hudson car, reguardless of engine can compete in this race.
4) Standard NHRA rules will apply so there should be no surprises there.
5) Entry fee will be listed soon but expect it to be in the $30-$40 dollar range.
Remember this is for fun and braging rights here so don't expect round money or anything like that. Its the "I'm king of the Hudson Hill" race here guys!
6) This will be a standard bracket racing format. Dial it, run it & hope you don't break out.
7) The Hudson Class will run directly after the SuperSport (street) class
and before Bracket 2 (Pro or No-Box) class. If you wish to run more than one class that's no problem.
Anybody that is interested please send me a privite email and I will start a list of who is wanting to show up. Remember its not the fastest guy that always wins a race like this. Its for fun and I believe we all will have a ball doing this.
Also remember that this is not a HET sponsered event or associated with the HET. I do not want to take anything away from the special saturday night banquet and auction that the HET club runs during the Nationals.
If you guys want to show up and offer support and root us on here is the link to the Muncie web site:
http://www.munciedrag.com/
Lets show the Brand X guys just how bad-a$$ed these old Flathead Hudson engines and cars are.
Also last thing: the fisrt spot in the field is being fielded by my 50 Pacemaker so we need 9 more guys. I may offer my 57 Hornet Hollywood as a rent-a-racer if anybody is interested in driving her!
If any of you need to reach me by phone I am listed in the club roster but call after 8:30 as I have dial-up.
thanks,
Ralph Alden

This is a great addition to my plane trip to the Auburn National meet and I just might take you up on that 1957 Hornet Hollywood racer rental...But does she shift anything like a 1929 Hudson ???? That would help me out alot with speed shifting...LOL...:) Thanks, Ron0 -
I'd pay to see a '29 on the race track..... the crowd would love it and you could get a record in the other direction. heheheh0
-
OK I give, what are you guys talking about?
Does the 29 Hudson have something special I havn't heard about?
The 57 Hornet has a controled coupling hydro and I know its a 4-speed
but not like the single or dual range hydros of the eariler cars.
Really this is a shameless bump to get this back up to the top.
I would like to see some guys step up and declare that they can
kick my A$$ at the drag strip!
Lets see what the turbocharged 262 that Super651 is running can do!
I know that SpringSpeeddeamond has a hot 41 Hudson coupe but how
good is he at dialing it in?
Randy and Russ Maas are experienced drag racers so they will be a force to be reconded with were ever they race at.
And lets see Hudsonator get one of his out and flog the crap out of it to have some fun.
Who is game to have some good, smokie, burnt rubber FUN!
Lets hear it guys: Who is ready for some Drag Racing action?
PaceRacer500 -
Sure sounds like a good time, however, I was hoping one of the tracks would be open on a Wed. or Fri. nite for a test & tune we could go to and not interfer with with banquet.0
-
I just checked the Muncie Web Page and they are open on Wed. nite for test and tune. Wed. nite would be my suggestion. I'm sure we could have our grudge and bragging rites on that nite, and might have a larger crowd attend from the HET nats. Could even need pit crews.
Randy0 -
Randy,
I would have no problem doing this on wenesday night instead providing everybody would be up for that instead of saturday night.
The track personal are very easy to work with at Muncie and I know they are use to large groups on test & tune night.
I hope to see you run the 41 there and show these guys how powerful it is!
thanks,
PaceRacer500 -
I'm up for it. I'll try really hard to get in the fray. It will be the '49 if anything. Stock 308 with the McCulloch, if I can get that working by July.
Randy, how are the Fisher dampers looking? I may want to investigate one of those for the McCulloch setup before I get locked into a single sheave pulley configuration?
Mark0 -
So what are the regulations? Do I need a helmet? Any particular equipment needed on the car? If I can just come and run I'm in. I'll be bringing a nearly stock Hornet with Hydro, in reasonably good mechanical condition.0
-
You know what would be sweet (and yes I'm posting this to help keep it near the top of the bulletin board) ... to see one of the HETers with a pre-war indy car at the drag strip. Esp one of those taper-tailed early Super Six's. Anyone on here got one of those ? hehe0
-
Hello, I haven't been online for a week or so... I'm in for the Wednesday night racing action. Once we get closer to the race date, I'll verify if my wife will be running a car as well. If gas prices aren't too high, we will bring two Hudsons. The race car will be trailered, of course, and we are discussing bringing the '40 2dr sedan as well. It is 308 powered with a 700r behind it.
Dany Spring0 -
Well I am definatly up to just see all the Hudson Drag Racers show up at any track on the same day just to have some fun. If its on wednesday then I will work with Roger at Muncie to do this.
Good to hear that Dany and His wife will be there.
I also know that there are several others that will show up for the fun!
As far as the rules I believe from past experience that the track officals at Muncie will work with us. For example for a stock vehicle you would not need a helmet, or sfi jacket BUT seatbelts are a must have item.
Basically what I am saying is that the guys that race on a regular basis will know what they need. The rest that are running stock vehicles or lightly modified vehicles I can help you out here. I will bring an extra helmet.
Just remember that you have to have seat belts.
thanks guys for the support on what may beocme the 1st annual Hudson Drag Race!
later,
PaceRacer500 -
So what sort of seat belts are required? Will two lap belts on the front seat do? We were going to add those anyway. Do you need a shoulder belt? I could bring one of my 3/4 motorcycle helmets if that would do.0
-
dwardo99,
Normally two lap belts would be fine if your hudson is stock or mostly stock. Usually five point harnesses are not needed for a street car unless it's built to run in a quicker class than street or really really quick. I can't remember the actual time cut off. A shoulder belt is not needed.
Just how quick is your hudson going to be? I always take my helmet but the time cut off for that is 13.99 in the quarter mile.
thanks,
PaceRacer500 -
The only way that car will do 13.99 would be in a half-mile vertical drop! I figure maybe 18 seconds? Sounds like we're good to go.0
-
don't forget a catch can for your coolant overflow tube. gotta keep the track safe for the other guys.0
-
Thanks Hornet53, the catch can is one that I did forget.
Lap belts are a must and the quicker cars will need a 5 point harness
that has not expired.
Other things to check are:
Battery must be solidly mounted.
All lugs must be on the wheels.
neutral safety switches must be functional on automatic transmission cars.
Each vehicle must have at least 1 red light visible at the rear at night.
Cars running slicks will need a driveshaft safety loop.
Open exhaust is ok at this track.
The most important one that the vehicles cannot be leaking any fluid of any kind. They must be dry!
thanks,
PaceRacer500 -

I Got a Stepdown for ya!:D
Unfortunatly we can't be there. Have a great time everyone!0 -
Paul,
I would love to see you bring your's out and race the blue 57 I bought
from you in september. It would be a fantastic "GRUDGE" race if there ever
was one!
Also guys there will be a little notice run in one of the up-coming WTN
magazines about this event to draw even more people. Once I get things
finalized I will fill in everybody here as well.
Looks like we are going to have a good turnout for this.

Guys,
Here is the final deal on the Drag Racing at Muncie Dragway on Wednesday the 25th of July during the Nationals at Auburn.
TRACK TIMES:
Gated open at 5:00pm.
Time trials start at 5:30pm. This is like a open pratice. You can run as many
times as you want or the car can take.
If you want to run off aginst another Hudson this will should be no problem.
Muncie has a Trophy race that starts at 8:00pm. This is run as a bracket race
by my understanding. A word of warning here: The local Guys are some of
the toughest guys to beat at this track! BE PREPARED to Drive the big end
if you enter the Trophy race.
Track closed at 9:30 ot 10:00 depending on car count.
Remember the guys at Muncie are a great bunch of hard-core drag racers
and are open to Hudson only Grudge racing.
Rain date is Thursday the 26th of July.
COST:
Cost to race is $20.00 per vehicle.
Cost to watch is $7.00 per person.
DIRECTIONS:
From Auburn Exit 129 on interstate 69 head south to Muncie exit #45.
This is also known as the first Muncie exit as you enter from the north side
of Muncie.
The road at exit #45 is listed at US35 / IN28. You will turn left onto US35/
IN28 and head east. This exit is about 85 miles south of Auburn.
At exit #45 you need to turn left, going over I-69 and heading east. This
is a 2-lane main road with some stops and passes thru some small towns
before it gets to the next turn. Its about 15 miles to the next interchange
but its a good, smooth road.
Stay on US35/IN28 and take this to 67 / IN28 interchange. This is quite
a ways from exit #45 at I-69. The interchange is a "T" and there is a gas
station on the right side so if you need supplies here is your best chance.
AT the 67 / IN28 interchange turn left and head north-northeast. After the
big sweeping right hand turn as you top the hill Muncie Dragway will be on
the right hand side of the road. This is about 2 miles from the US35/IN28
and 67 interchange.
The track access for racers and spectators is the road just at the east end
of the Muncie track complex. I beleive this road is listed as North Black
Cemetary Road. Just Remember its the road right next to the track,
Turn right and the main gates are about 3/4 of the way down the track.
NOTE: long trailers will need to be careful because the entrance is a 180
degree turn.
Total milage one way from Auburn is about 100 miles.
If any of you wish to print off a map from MapQuest the track address is:
Muncie Dragway
7901 East State Road 28/67
Albany, Indiana 47329
Basic rules:
First thing here is that the guys that drag race their cars should know
what type of safety equipment they need and what their car must have.
The following information is for the guys that have never done this or need
some basic questions answered.
1) all vehicles must have a radiator overflow can of at least 24oz. This
can be a tempary pop bottle duct taped to the core support or a permenant
one.
2) all vehicles must have lap seat belts. Solder harnesses are not required
in the slower street vehicle.
3) the battery must be securly bolted down to the vehicle.
4) the vehicle must be leak free, I.E. no oil leaks, no transmission leaks, no
rear end leaks.
5) all lug bolts or nuts must be present on each wheel.
6) vehicles with slicks must have a driveshaft safety loop.
7) Helmets are only required on vehicles that are faster than a 13.99 in
the quarter mile.
8) each vehicle must have 1 red light that is visible to the rear for night time
racing.
9) when in doubt, ask someone about a concern you have.
As a side note a copy of this will be sent to the editor of the WTN so it
will appear in the issue of the magazine to draw more people. With the
light schedule planned on wednesday night at the nationals lets hope quite
a few people show up.
I will be attending the Nationals in Wednesday and will be pulling out about
3:30pm so if you want to form a caravan down to Muncie be on the lookout
for the 50 Pacemaker on a trailer being pulled by a blue Ford F150 4x4
heading south on 69.
Also I plan on contacting one of the local Indinapolis News channels to see
if they are willing to show up and give us Hudson boys some coverage.
I look foward to seeing you all show up, if not to race, show up to root us
on!
thanks and see you all there,
PaceRacer500 -
For those of us who can't make it to the track.
Any chance of someone videoing the action & making it available on the web? Maybe "YouTube" or something similar?0 -
I have a large trophy from [Gopher State Timing Association] GSTA, for running a Jet with a 308, twin H 7X back in "66. It ran a 14.92 and held the record at that track in its class for many years. Where are our first ones when you need them. The next best time I won with was a 54 Hornet, twin H all stock in 67, with only 19,000 orig. on it. It was a screamer at 16.85. And beat a Rambler rebel, Caddy, & and a Ford flat head, all V/8's. They were all impressed. It later got in a 4 car collision on a local freeway and saved my life that day. it is gone now but the engine and tranny are in a restored convertible, owned by a guy still in MN. Great racing days those were. I will put something together and see ya at the starting line. Smok'n snow tires and all.0
-
bobbydamit,
those snow tires the ones with wide white walls? I have one that
came with my Pacemaker that looks cool but its been burnt out
to the cords.
just make sure you take the studs out of the snow tires before
you show up!
PaceRacer500 -
My old snows use to be saw dust impregnated and the smoke just billowed. I will show up with some worn flat nylons to burn up this time. Fun stuff. I had to chain down my center drive shaft bearing as it would rip out the rubber mounts.0
-
I'm bumping this up to hear some smack.
actually I'm interested in knowing who's going to try and show.
It's July already.
Mark0 -
Paceracer, Due to the 2.73 Mopar Diff.and that Cork-Burning 9 inch clutch a stock 202 would put it to shame, but from about 35 mph and up it really is a fun car to drive.
We did make a high speed run the other day. I was running next to my sons 1970 AMX Powered by a 401 with 2-carters on a Cross-Ram Factory manifold . When the 46 reached 95 MPH ( with his calibrated 140 speedo)
the boost was only reading 3 lbs and the Holley was not fully open and at that point I backed off ,not ready to blow it up just yet. ( my 308 is not ready yet) I really dont know what the top speed would be . The AMX then went out of site as he was on the way for another 130-140 mph top run. ( he also has a Certified speedo in the car ) This run was made on a 2 lane black-top with no other cars in site for about 10 miles.
Thanks to All Rudy.0 -

Even if you don't run your turbo'ed 46, you are still gonna be there aren't ya?0 -
