Cylinder Head

I have followed the step for removal of the head all the way to removal of the cap screws. I have tried to remove a couple, but have been unable to break their grip. I ran the engine for awhile to heat them up, but am now afraid of breaking one or more off in the block. I did this on another engine when I went to a larger wrench for more leverage. Any helpful hints for loosening the cap screws on my 52 308?

  • Well, nevermind. I got the head off without breaking anything. I have found antifreeze in 3 of the 6 cylinders. I am a novice, can somebody tell me what I have to next?
  • If you found antifreeze in the cylinders you probably had a blown head gasket. So clean everything up so you can give the cylinders a visual inspection for cracks. Turn the engine over by hand and check for sticky valves. As each valve is in the open position check the valve seat visually. Once this is done clean the head I would media blast it and inspect it. Clean the top of the block make sure you cleanup all debris after your cleaning operation. Buy a new gasket from Dale Cooper and follow the manual to install the gasket and head using the proper torquing sequence.

I am assuming you just want to rebutton this engine and are not removing the head as a precursor to a rebuild. Also look at the old gasket you removed and check for damage unless you can not discern the difference between damage and what it took to remove the head. This way you can tell if the gasket had problems that caused your fluid leak.
  • take your head to the local machine shop and have it surfaced ten thousands should clean it up. run a tap down all threads in block and clean threads on head bolts. dilp them in liquid permates when installing and use torque sequence to tighten down head. GOOD LUCK, BILL ALBRIGHT HAVE DONE A HUNDRED OF THEM, OR MORE LOL
  • Bill, I think I remember a post somewhere discussing what type of glue one would use when reinstalling a head gasket, ( if anything is used ).

Didn't you say something about silver paint ( or was that for manifold gaskets )?

What do you recommend for both applictions ??

    silverone.
  • If there is antifreeze in the cylinders, do now have to change the oil?
  • I would definately change the oil. It probably leaked past the rings or down the valves. Why take a chance when all it will cost you is 7 qts of oil?
  • Best thing for head gaskets is to get one of Dale Coopers new head gaskets that does not need any additional treatment in has gasket treatment applied to it. Put it on torque it down and thats it.

If you have one of the older gaskets then you can try one of the many "we swear by this" procedures of using spray on gasket tack. Or amorall, or copper coat, or silver paint, or,or,or......

The only thing you need to remember is put the gasket on properly torque the head in the correct sequence and to the correct foot pounds. Remembering that for the mid 51 year on Hudson changed the foot pounds it recommended in the manual.
  • That sounds like sound advice '51 !! I have a couple NOS gaskets around, but I think I'll order a couple "new style" ones from Dale --- do it right the first time, and forget about it.

Nothing I hate worse than re-doing something a second time because I took a short-cut or was in a hurry the first time.
  • yes nothing is needed on the new type gaskets, dSI swear by armorall on the old metal?asbestos head gaskets. dsIL use nothing on the manifold gasket, never any problems I DIDNT ADD CHANGE THE OIL BECAUSE I THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE OBVIOUS TO YOU . GET RID OF ANY ANTIFREEZE IN THE CRANKCASE GOOD LUCK, BILL ALBRIGHT

You would always want to change the oil when doing a head replacement anyway...

The big question is - what does the oil look like? White'ish or milky looking sludge would probably warrant a look at the main bearings as well don't you think?
