  • The engine in your 52 should be gold.

John , All 51-53 Hornet engines were painted gold by the factory except for the 54 model year which was a chinese red. The exception was the crate or replacement motors which came in blue . These were to identify replacement motors VS. factory installed.

What color were the "Championship Sixes" in the Kenosha cars?

Does that mean that true 7X motors are blue, because they were dealer installed?
  • The "Championship 6" in my '55 Kenosha car is original and is red. I have another Hash engine which is blue so it must be a factory replacement as suggested or in '56 and '57 the sixes were blue.
  • My '56 Super Wasp 202 single-carb engine was red.

I can remember that we installed only a few replacement engines in the '49 thru '54 period, but the blocks we received from the factory were kind of a faded maroon or red color. Can't say that I ever saw a blue Hudson engine shipped in from the factory.

The Jet 202 engine is Red in 1953-1954; And the same engine is red in the 1955-1956 Wasp.

The '53 Jet engine was gold like the Hornet. In 1954 all engines were Red.

I think the six cylinder engines in the AMC Hudsons were red, but that was after my dad sold out his dealership, so I can't be certain

  • I have seen two crated engines from the factory both were a faded red color. I not seen a blue crated engine from Hudson. That color may have been an after 54 item or a JC Whitney color for the engines they sold.

My '53 Super Jet has a red block. I wonder if the color change happened mid year.

Does your engine number match the serial number of the car? One of the earliest '54 Jets came thru with a gold engine, but all after that all had the red color engine.

  • I'll check on that tonite when I get home. I never thought about it being a later block because I don't recall ever seeing a gold block 202, but then again - you don't see 202's everyday. That "frame-off restoration" '53 Jet that's on eBay right now has a red block, but it has lots of inaccurate things done to it, so the wrong engine color wouldn't be a surprise on that one.
