that's got to be a bad april fools joke....0

Not according to Doug, last night on the chatroom! Unless I was speaking to his evil twin brother! He will continue to do the multi-disc clutches and supply Hudsonite of his own recipe, though. (Hope I got that right, Doug!)
I assume Doug will post a message expanding on this information.
Of course, we're all very sorry to hear this.0 -
Yes,
Very sorry to say the least. I don't think Hudson clutches had that fine of craftsmanship when new.
Not to mention the throwout bearings, I know they didn't!

I have chosen to phase out the clutch business. It was getting to hard to try and explain "how to"diagnose, repair and install a Hudson clutch properly! It seems the hardest ones to make understand are the ones that have been doing it the longest!!! People doing it for 40 years or more. You know it is a tougher job[bulk weight and mass] and really should be done with help,I know this because I have been doing it for more than 40 years. If your 85,you should realize your not a spring chicken anymore and should get help, hire help or just don't do it.When you damage the parts, you should not blame the parts, but need to look in a mirror and be honest with yourself!!! I have tried to provide the best parts I could. If I sent it out,I would install it in anything I own.I don't claim to know everything about everything, but clutches I do know!.I know why most clutch parts fail, and can show you,if you chose to listen.I think I know what works and what doesn't,I've spent a considerable amount of time on R&D.My honesty and ability have recently been questioned, and being a vendor has gotten much harder.People are trying to save a buck here or there, which isn't all bad,but you need to figure out what parts to do this with.I have tried to provide the knowledge, the parts and the support to make the clutch job as easy as possible to people. You know how the story goes"a few ruin it for everyone"!! There is a small group that have been everything but honest.Always a Hudson nut-Doug0

Say it ain't so Doug!
Do you mean you're still going to repair them but you won't sell them for people to install themselves?
Are you selling the clutch business to someone else?
How much longer till you phase out ?
Why not just refuse to deal the individuals in question? I think you're almost the only game in town for Hudson clutches.0 -
Dave Kostansek Told me he gave up his carburetor rebuilding service for the same reasons that Doug is getting out of the clutch buisness. Larry at Clifford performance is having the same problems.0

Dr. Doug,
Sorry to hear about your situation, but I don't question it, that's entirely your business and your decision alone. I do however, want you to know how grateful some of us in the Hudson world are for your past, and hopefully future contributions. You, of course did my complete clutch system a couple of years ago, and following your explicit, caring instructions, I was able to take my time, and bolt it all up with not a lick of difficulty. It continues to perform perfectly, and will hopefully last me a long time. When I was upgrading to overdrive in '04-05, I didn't think too much about the clutch. I also started out thinking 'cheapest route', and you convinced me that if I want to save money, I should do it with tires, or other systems that aren't quite buried into the bowels of the beast like the clutch is. I'm glad I had you do the whole system. The above post is correct in that I don't think the original factory clutch could've have been any better. I was truly impressed with the quality of parts you rebuilt for me. Of course, I'm heeding your advice on everything from maintaining the system to how to simply start the car, and I'm grateful for your expertise.
Having said that, you deserve to take a break, I can see how you could be taken for granted for what you were doing. At least that should leave you more time for your own projects! That's good. Keep in mind that some people are just 'born to *****', they'd complain if they were being hanged with a new rope. See you in Auburn, buddy.
Hudsonly,

I would like to add to the posts above. When I did the clutch on my 39 a few years ago. Doug was not only a great help on redoing my clutch, but free with guidance on installing it. Today it works as smooth as glass. Thanks, Doug. Hope to see you in Auburn. Gene Birdsall0

I've been involved in every aspect of the collecting car hobby for (30) thirty years. Doug is one of the most honest, knowledgeable, and generous restorers I've had the privilege of working with. Pay the price-it's worth it-his products and service work.

Doug, I Hope You Reconsider After A Rest And Continue Your Fine Service, All Your Parts Have Worked Excellent Here At The Twin H Ranch. By The Way. We Know How To Install Them. Best Wishes, Bill Albright 37 Year Hudson Restorer0

Doug also helped me with a new clutch for my '30 Essex. He was very helpful and talked me through a couple of adjustments, calling me as soon as he walked in the door from a vacation. He didn't have to do that, but did because he was willing to help a Club Member in a pinch. We seem to be surrounded by people who like to complain for the sake of complaining-Doug has done the HET Club a great service and there are plenty in the 'silent majority' who would like to thank him!0

Doug.
I am sorry to hear that you are getting out of the clutch business. I really appreciated your advice and your products.
I have been in the retail furniture businees for forty years and believe me I know how difficult it can be to deal with people. I agree with "Joe30 essex"
you have done the HET Club a great service and there are plenty in the 'silent majority' who appreciate your hard work.

this is sad news. doug did my clutch plate and i was very happy with the work and the fair pricing. you cannot get quality..limited production work for free. it saddens me to hear when the #*#%$ in our hobby wear someone down. best of luck on your new path doug. regards, tom peterson0

Doug, I certainly hope You reconsider. In your heart and mind, you know you have always done the best you could. Over the years, I have always recommended you and have never heard a complaint, only thank you for recommendation. I have no idea who I will recommend now, as I never had a problem with your parts or advise.

Doug, I am sorry to hear this.
Please consider this, I know that it is hard dealing with people when everything is going smoothly. Much harder when they are having problems with their cars. Both of my cars are automatics and so, I have never used your parts, but I do know people, who have. Lloyd Whedbee from the Pigeon Forge meet, who bought the set up for his 49 Convertible and says that his car has never performed better. I have heard many people talk about you and the service that you provide, and I have met you on several occaisions. I was at the Pigeon Forge Meets and at the Central Regional for your service tips tech session. and was impressed by your knowledge. I hope you will take to heart, the opinions expressed here and note that you have as many, if not more, supporters than detracters.

Doug,
I am not one of the "old" Hudson guys. I just discovered Hudsons a couple of years ago. I didn't even know I had a wet clutch for a year after I got the car! I have been talking to everyone that had any knowledge of Hudsons for information and guidance. One thing was common - the name of Bill Albright, Al Saffrahn, and Doug Wildrick were always referred to as the "experts". You were the name mentioned when I asked any questions related to Hudson clutches.
I know I don't know many things about these neat old cars and look to those with the experience and expertise to keep Hudsons on the road ( where they belong ). If you hang up your guns, there will be a large void and a lot of new guys will have no where to go to get excellent clutch parts for their Hudsons. We might even have to change to dry clutches to keep these old cars moving ( just kidding, I hope )
Sure can understand the frustration of "know everything and blame the parts experts", but there are some of us out here that really need someone that has the knowledge and can provide parts and guidance to those of us that have never had a Hudson clutch out of the car.

Hi everyone, I am Richie and live in GA. I am new to the Hudson world, but not new to old cars. I recently bought a 49 Super Six and it needed a clutch when I bought it. I had never heard of a wet clutch in cars, only motorcycles. After searching and calling around I found out about Dr. Doug. I ordered a pressure plate, clutch disc, Hudsonite, trans. mount and driveshaft mounts. Doug gave me instructions on the installation and some other part numbers I needed. Talk about an honest, trusting person, Doug told me to send a check once I got the total amount due. Well I sent him a check and I rec'd the parts before he got the check, I know!! Doug doesn't know me from Adam !! I am 63 years old and followed Dougs instructions and installed my new clutch assembly. The car runs great. It is sad to have a situation like this! I wish Doug well in whatever he ventures into. Thank you Doug for all your help. Richie.0

I may be prejudiced because Doug is a good friend of mine, but he is the best. Not only does my car have a Wildrick clutch (installed by Al Saffrahn), but I have been in Doug's shop and seen for myself how he is set up to build and rebuild Hudson clutches. He has invested a lot of time, money and energy into building a full-service Hudson business. We need him, and more like him...:(0

Don't do it Doug We need ya!!

I would like to put the facts straight here, once and for all.I did not make a business decision solely based on any poll or any one particular incident. My business decision was based on personal and business directions.
I appreciate all the support over the years and on this forum. I fully support the HET Club and its members and I thank you for your business.
Hudsonly, Doug0 -
I have decided to "rewind" this thread back by a few posts and open it up again. I apologize to those whose posts I removed but that's that.
All future posts in this thread will please pertain only to the narrow subject of Doug Wildrick or the present status of the Hudson clutch rebuilding business. The management reserves the right to remove any posts that deviate from this subject in any way.0 -
Surely there's a tolerable reason why Wildrick will stop making clutch parts. Not sure if they also make Mercedes clutch discs. Hope this will be known to the public for this will be a very adverse issue.0

It is sad to see one of our "experts" coming to this point - but understandable. We have so few people like Doug in our club. But I know where he's coming from. There seems to be that 10% who know everything, but no nothing (maybe it's jealousy because somebody else knows something they don't) - and this is true in life, business, the Lions Club, the Shriners or the Hudson club.
While I'm not in a major service area to club members, I do try to offer something for club members - or at least I hope I do - to pay back 35+ years of fun, new friends and the family this HET club has been to me. If I have something in the literature field that somebody needs, I'll either ask a fair price for it (hopefully) or, if I can email it I'll do so for free. I'm talking here about all the Hudson material I've scanned into my computer, put on my web sites, whatever.
However, yes, I've run into the "10 percenter club", more often than I like. But I solved it in my own little way - I have a "don't have that" list. You step on my fingers, you need some piece of literature I have scanned, all of a sudden I "don't have that!!!" In many cases I truly don't have what you might want - but then, you have to ask yourself am I one of Alex's "10 percenters!!" Think about it.
Meantime, Doug, and everybody out there who's given service, advice, whatever was needed to help people in this club keep their Hudson cars going, I give you the ultimate complement - a tip of Aunt Hesters bonnet (you have had to have been in the club for a long time to know what that means!!.)
Keep up the good work and ignore the "10 percenters."
Hudsonly,
Alex Burr0 -
