A real parts store

Last week I decided to replace the carrier bearing in my "52 Hornet. After finally getting it off the drive shaft, I took it down to a CarQuest parts store near my office on Friday. I had heard that the guy that ran the store used to have an independant store near where I used to live. His counter guys were always "car guys", unlike todays retail stores.

When I walked in, there were four or five guys ready to help me. I showed one of the guys, who appeared to be in his mid 30's, the bearing and asked if he might have one like it. I mentioned that I had heard that it might be the same as a "64 Chev P/U. (I try to avoid telling people that I am looking for Hudson parts. We all know why.)

He said he vaguely reconized the numbers stamped on the bearing. He then asked me "what is it really for?"

I broke down and said " '52 Hudson".

As he was reaching under the counter, he said "Hornet, Commodore, or Pacemaker".

I was stunned, but I knew that I had found a new parts store!

They actually had a book that listed the part, AND HAD IT IN STOCK! It cost me about $30, but at that moment I would have paid $50 just because they had it in a book, knew how to find it, and stocked it!

That was the start of a great weekend.
