Looking for an overdrive trans.

Hello everyone, I have a 49 Super Six non overdrive car, with 410's in it now. It is wound up pretty good at 60 mph. Does anyone on the forum have a single lever overdrive transmission they want to sell? Would be great if it came with all the related parts, but not necessary. I want to drive my car on the highway a lot, but don't think that is a good idea without overdrive. Thanks in advance, Richie.

  • Hello Richie,

I have a 1949 Commodore 8 auto trans with overdrive. The owner I purchased the car from said it had only 17000 miles. I am making a street rod out of the Hudson and I am going to sell the engine and transmission.

If you are interested please email me at bennettspring@aol.com

    Thanks

Hello Harry54, I should have made myself clear, I neglected to add that my car is a 3 speed standard, non overdrive. Thank you, Richie.

    Richie,

For what it's worth, I did the exact same upgrade to my '49 a couple of years ago. You won't be disappointed, what a pleasure to drive now...at all speeds! I was able to find a car in a junkyard that supplied almost everything I needed; tranny, (shorter) driveshaft assembly, dash cable and mounting bracket. Like many older transmissions, since they're 'sealed' the inside was like new so it just needed a good clean and paint, after I replaced all of the seals and gaskets that could be accessed without tearing down. For the electrical side, I was extremely grateful for the help Park W. gave me. I bought a new relay from Napa and a resistor for my solenoid from Parts Express (it's a 12V car). Have you found a schematic/instructions online to help you out? I think Ken Cates website has a good detailed description of what you need. Good Luck.

What size resistor for the solenoid? Wonder if you could also use a 6 v. relay, with resistor?

Is the 254 running or running when pulled? Would like price and location.

    Thanks in advance,

Thanks Hudsonguy, yes I have visited many, many web sites and found a wealth of info. I have a 47 Plymouth that I up-graded to an OD and like you stated it is a pleasure to drive, anywhere at 70 mph. That is kinda what I am looking for in the up-grade to OD in the Hudson. Thanks again, Richie.

couldnt you use the newer two lever O.D. trans if you used the later steering column with it ? looks like it would be easy to change too.

Stateline, I wish I knew. If I could use all the related parts, steering column, driveshaft, solenoids, relays, wiring, linkage rods and anything else connected and if it all fit I would try that. That would be like just transfering all OD components from your 52 over to my 49. I don't know that much about Hudsons yet, but it seems logical that it should work. I'm open to any comments about doing something like this. Thanks Stateline, and thanks to anyone who can help in this area. Richie.
  • Thanks, the motor was running and still in the car. It drove fine. It is an automatic with overdrive. When it first started it would have a small puff of smoke, very small, after that it ran fine. I do not know what to price it at. Whatever is fair. I live in central Missouri. The motor is still in the car and could be started. We will be pulling it out in the next few weeks. Thanks

Sorry Commodore 8, I thought I did all the right things, but I am not a good computer person. I should have used the PM thing. All I said was thank you and that I had a 3 speed standard and I should have made myself clear. Thanks again,Richie.
  • Hey Richie, The commodore eight I have is a three speed stick with overdrive. I must have had a brain #$%t or something. The car runs good and is supposed to have 17000 mile on it. I would be interested in selling the engine and trans, as we are going to make a street rod. My mechanic believes the mileage to be correct, no rust, org paint, int, etc.

    Thanks Jim
