Thanks commodore8
No problems with putting a newer subframe.
JSRAIL is using a Fatman fab front subframe that used MII suspension and steering components. Spendy... but nice looking from the pictures and descriptions and would allow air bag suspension upgrade if thats the look you're after...
try this thread for more information on the Fatman setup...

I believe their are other forum threads about guys using later model camaro front clips on a stepdown.
Another thought I have had is that you could potentially just replace the front cradle and get the same effect without cutting out and replacing the front sub-frame - you'd have to go to a wrecking yard and start measuring to find the correct one.
Really it all comes down to budget and time - dreams are free! which is why so many projects never get finished as our dreams are always bigger than our wallet and the time we have!
If I wanted a lowered Hudson with 100% late model steering/suspension/running gear etc. I'd save up my $$ and go with the Fatman Setup
For my current 49 build my decision was to keep the build costs down by using as much of the original components as I could while upgrading the drivetrain to a late model normally asperated 454 with the idea that the install looks like it was meant to be there from 1949 - we'll see if I can pull it off0 -
I am going to provide a brief reply to this request as I have not gotten the information to the onwer of the following business.
W. H. Goodwin runs Nine Lives Restorations, which provides Rack and pinion set ups based on a replacement frame stub. His market focus is actually street rods. He can do Stepdown and other models of Hudson's but to date has no measurements. I need to send him a Hudson Stepdown frame measurement sheet. Good Luck
