rebuilt Autolite generator

Just got my 53 Hornet 6V GGW generator back from the electric shop. I really like the look of the raw cast iron commutator and drive heads. It's amazing how nice this generator cleaned up after years of use and engine grime build-up. But I figure the raw cast iron will flash-rust in about a week's time. Can anyone tell me how the generators were painted when factory-fresh? Should I clear-coat the heads or paint them black to match the case? ArtS

  • All generators were painted black except the auto-lite label. Walt.

How much did you pay to have it rebuilt? Any ol' electric shop?

I use Hite Parts Exchange here in Columbus, OH and have had good service and fast turn-around for a fair price. They have a web site and rebuild most car and truck electrical devices as well as carbs. For this generator, the cost was $120. For the Hornet 6V starter, cost was about $90. Have not used them for carbs since I can handle that myself. Carb service is quite pricey (around $150 to $200). ArtS
