Hi everyone my name is lou and i just bought a 48 4door hudson stepdown.

I have a question i was wondering if someone could tell me the cheapest front frame clip conversion to do in order to put air ride suspension on the car. Thanks for the help!

Whatever you plan to do, please be sure to save everything you remove, and offer it for sale. People can use that stuff!

You might want to try posting on the Hot Rod sub-group of Hudsons, as they deal a lot with modified Hudsons. (Of course, you might want to drive your car a bit before deciding to do anything with it. A lot of us like them just the way they are!)

Once you drive the car, you'll find out that you don't need air ride and when you get the motor running right you won't need the 350 either for reliability or power. Save ya a lot of work.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Hudsons.

I guess we can go thru the cursory stuff here...

If you didn't do so, check into joining the hudson club (HET club)

Also, I would further recommend one of two things...

    1) Get the hudson running and driving, see how it drives, handles, steers, etc... These cars were world class for their handling, and ride quality. I would hate to see you not take at least a peak at what a stock hudson has to offer. The motors are real torque monsters, and parts are readily available, as well as many updates to make your hudson a roadworthy modern day driver, such as disc brake conversions, (even turbo 350 tranny adapters to bolt direct to a hudson engine...) etc.... so at least from the purist standpoint, give it a chance. Trust me, you'll love the center link steering.

    2) If you are dead set on the subframing, and rodding/modifying route, well, I would recommend one thing, do not look for the cheapest method, or approach, do it right, for your safety and others. Pick the brains of the street rodders, see what they are using, spend time researching it, figure out something that will work and make your time and effort a rewarding experience. A 350 will be a good reliable transplant, and the bonus of AC, and PS and the extra HP are a real bonus, but I would really weigh out your options before commiting to this option. Air Ride is really up to you, sitting a hudson on the ground, while it might seem cool, i think will be a lot of work, especially if you are looking for the cheap route, but hey, have fun with it. Lowered hudson have a great stance, but seriously, they sit pretty low already... Once you cut the frame, your pretty much committed, if nothing else, if you start it, do the project justice, stick with it, and finish it.

GOod luck, hope I posted something useful for you.
  • Thanks guys for all the info and help im really wanting to do the air ride for the ability to get the car as low as possible. The car is just a roller with no motor or trans and no pedals but almost everything else is there minus some outer trim and the front seat.If anyone knows where to get a front seat or any of the glass that would be a great help. All the glass is there but kids with bb guns really did a number on some of it mainly the pass. side windshield and drivers side front door.

Sounds like you've got your work cut out for ya! Good luck and welcome to the Hudson Madhouse!

Shameless commercial pitch, here: If you intend to hold onto this thing for any length of time you might want to join the H-E-T Club (misery loves company) where you'll find kindred souls, leads on spare parts and a clearinghouse for practical help. I'm sure the trim, front seat and any number of original Hudson items are available from various Hudson vendors, at a reasonable cost. (Though this Hudson Forum has a couple hundred Club and non-Club members watching it, the Club magazine has over 3500 readers, so you'll have a greater audience and see many more sellers there.)

The homepage is at http://www.hudsonclub.org/ , if you haven't been there.

  • ahhh thank you rambo!
  • I may have missed it, but did you say what part of the country you are in?
  • i am in oklahoma.
  • If you really want to do a subframe, By all means go with a "Fatman " subframe. Well worth the money and they have it all figured out for you. I can't get his website to work, but not hard to find him in the street rod magazines.
  • thanks junk hound!
