George Schmidt, 73, died yesterday in Mishicot, Wisconsin. He wrote a column in the WTN for over 30 years. He had no family. His friends are burying his ashes with a Hudson steering wheel and his driver's licence. :(

    I've corresponded with George since the 1970's on technical issues, and I saved all of his letters. He was one of a kind, a real 'retro' guy after my own heart (cellphone? He didn't even own a telephone!). His love of old Hudsons was unwavering, and his column was a great asset to the WTN for years. He will be missed.

    I first wrote a letter to George in 1986 when I first got my 50C8. I had a number of questions about the Supermatic and George typed a 4 page letter addressing all the issues in detail. Since I finally got it on the road twenty some years later I wrote George about that and said I was depending upon him to help getting the Supermatic back in action. George wrote (typed and not on a computer either) back that he had been in the nursing home for a while with some illness but was back at home and ready for more questions, and ready to help any way he could. This is surely a major loss to all of us, with all the knowledge that George had collected over the years. I would suggest that the WTN editor start reprinting his many many columns he had written over the years, they were great!

    I never met George, but I enjoyed his articles, His knowledge of HUDSON AUTOMOBILES will be greatly missed.

    I may have met George at a national somewhere, but so many people to remember it's hard to remember if I did.

    We were kindred spirits in one respect - he wrote articles for the WTN, Aunt Hester sent in meet reports for the WTN a while back. So we had writting about Hudson's in common.

    You will be missed, George. Safe journey home.

    Geo Schmidt was an iconoclast even among Hudson folk. He fully believed in some of the engineering Hudson did when few else did. Even among the Hudson faithful. He never waivered in his core Hudson beliefs. He was generous with his knowledge and unshakable when it came to Hudson. Our ranks have taken a setback. RIP George.

    The HET club and the antique car hobby has lost a real treasure. George was THE authority on Drivemaster, Supermatic, and Vacumotive drive, and many other unique Hudson features. He would always be willing to help anyone with their Hudson mechanical puzzles. The more complicated, the better. George would always look forward to the letters sent to him by HET members, and his wit and wisdom was without peer. It would be a great tribute if we could have George Schmidt's 30 years of Hudson related articles printed in book form and offered in the Club Store. A wealth of information, that no Hudson owner should be without.

    George was a very nice person. The club, no the world, has lost a great asset. Rest in peace George.

    He will be missed he had the best articles in wtn, you could really learn a thing or two. I would like to see them go back thru the years and reprint them in the wtn.

    "Them" is me. I'm going to try to excerpt some of George's material, especially on Electric Hand, Supermatic, Vacumotive Drivemaster, etc. :cool:
