Hydro matic vibration

Can any one lend an opinion on why my dual range hydomatic shudders in low(L) and a bit in 3&4. It has been this way for some time. The trans up shifts well and almost perfectly down from high 4 to first with just a small shudder just as it drops into low ranges(i e second and first). The shudder in low at idle is pretty strong. It is like a driver holding the clutch in too long on a standard shift.

  • Are you sure it's the trans? Although I wouldn't rule out internal problems, have you checked the distributor advance, fluid level, engine and trans mounts, etc?
  • Sounds like a symptom of not having bushing in the crankshaft.

Thanks for your responses.Dist and mounts are ok.At the western Regional I asked folks about it.A few said that the bushing is probably bad but since the trans is to my knowledge was never rebuilt.

I am debating whether to rebuild the trans while its down.It operates well now, but I believe the trans must come down to replace the bushing any way. By the way this is a great group of folks in HET.very open and helpful to new members.
  • When was the last time you adjusted the bands on that tranny. Sounds like the front band is slipping at low speed.

I have not adjusted the bands since it was set up 6 or 7000 miles ago. If I remember the mechanic said that the adjustment is about maxxed out. I presume he meant that the trans is going to need a rebuild. The sad part is you have to pull the tranny down to see if the bushing is worn or more likley never installed by the machine shop.Should have joined the HET before beginning a restoration in 1990.But ,I love the car and will probably do the right thing.
  • You might want to look up A.J. "Gus" Souza in the HET roster and give him a call. He's a wiz when it comes to the dual-range Hyrad-matics. He's in Illinois.
