Terraplanes 'n' exhausts
Gentlemen:
Here's my situation: I have a '37 Terraplane utility coupe - model 70. It took me a long time to figure out that it actually has a '36 engine - confirmed by the SS#. Along the way, I looked at a buddy's '37 pickup - and realized that it also has a '36 engine, so maybe the factory was using up a supply of '36 engines on the 37 model 70s? Regardless, in the meantime, I ordered a '37 exhaust system, and when I got around to installing it, it's obvious that it won't fit at all. The exhaust flange is a different size, etc. etc. This was a while back, and like a lot of projects, this one sat around while I finished the house - you know the story, I'm sure.
My question: do the exhaust pipes go through the holes in the frame or under the frame? Also, the muffler I got will fit between the frame members, but the exhaust pipe from the engine is 2" OD, while the muffler exit port is more like 1 3/4" or 1 1/2"; won't the smaller diameter pipe cause a constipated (for lack of a better term) exhaust? Help! Also, sorry about the lack of proper terminolgy; it's late and I'm groggy at the keyboard.

You know in all the technical material I have, there is no mention of the exhaust pipe size! However, I think you ar emistaken as to the sixe of the manifold flange. The same flange gasket is specified for all '33-'39 models, and I'm pretty sure would apply up to '47's and Jet as well. The tail pipe is smaller than the front pipe, to keep the noise level down, and 1-3/4 or 1-7/8" would be the recommended size for these. Looking at the lubrication charts illustration, the front pipe goes through the frame at the front of the "X-member" on the '37, and under the frame on the '36. From memory, it also goes through a hole in the engine splash tray, below the manifold. However, if you have the '36 engine in your car, then it may be different, as the manifold is smaller, and doesn't project out so far.

I have a 36 and a 37 engine. The exhaust is a different size for the 36.It is probably 3/16th's smaller.I think when the engine got changed in 37,they up sized the exhaust.I found this out when I went to test run a 36 engine that I have, and tried to use the exhaust set-up for the 37-47 engines.I had to go digging in my stuff to find the head pipe and flange.0

I'm just curious: from what company did you order the exhaust system?0

The '37 engine was equipped with a two barrel carb and that intake manifold will not fit on a '36 engine. However the '37 could also have a single barrell carb. The major difference between the two engines is the bigger port engine which allowed for a 20HP increase. It would figure that the exhaust pipe would be of a greater diameter.0

Gentlemen:
Thanks very much for your responses. I'm feeling better now about what I have. I did check the pipes again, and the pipe between the exhaust manifold and the muffler is 2" OD, and the tailpipe from the muffler back is 1.5" OD, although I can't use this tailpipe because the bends aren't right and it won't fit under the car unless possibly if I put the whole exhaust under the frame; but that doesn't seem right. The manifold-exhaust piece, what there is left, clearly points to a hole in the X member of the frame where it connects to the muffler. I'm going to try having a new tailpipe made, or order one from Waldron's as per the suggestion above.
The system I have now I got from KEP--- (last three letters are missing from the label) from Ft Myers FL. Bearing in mind that I don't blame them, I simply ordered a 37 exhaust when I should have ordered a 36.0 -
Kepich.
Mixed reviews. The problem may not have been the difference between the '36 and '37 engines....

Keppich! Klass Kollection! I cannot believe that they are still in business. They sell junk that doesn't fit. But you were lucky, often they take your money and send you nothing at all.
In the information age we need to get the word out so we can patronize those who provide good products and avoid the Keppich's of the antique auto hobby world.
I just knew it was Keppich when I read the thread starter.
Good Night

Well, at least I now know what the problem was, and it probably was not the 36/37 engine difference. Netx time , believe me, I'll read some reviews before spending the money.
Thanks everybody
