Window removal question

Hey everyone, I'm still at it !!!(working on the 49) I am replacing the glass in the rear doors and am wondering if the glass can be removed without taking the window channel out. The only way I could get the glass out was by leaving it in the channel and taking out as a unit. I've done one door and will do the other rear door this week. If there is a way to remove the glass and leave the channel in place I like to do that. I got the glass out of the channel down inside the door, but it won't turn upwards to slide out the top. Any help about this is appreciated, thanks in advance. Richie.

  • That sounds like a difficult job. My rear fenders had to come off so it was easy to remove the glass, tract, etc. in one piece. Hopefully somone has done it your way and has the solution.
  • Have you removed the screws on the regulator and dropped it down into the door? you should be able to turn the glass minus the regulator sideways and slide it out of the door without removing the channels. I did my rear doors this way.

jsrail, I didn't think it would be that difficult. Thanks for your reply. Richie

51hornetA, Yes I have removed the screws and the regulator is out. The door is empty eccept for the glass and channel. The window glass is too long to turn it inside the door. I have manuvered it in every direction and it will not turn upward. Maybe the glass really is too long, longer than it should be. I have never had to remove the channel to get the glass out ever before. This is my first Hudson, that is why I am asking this question. I am learning about Hudsons as I go. Thanks 51hornetA. Richie.
  • No, it will come out I did it on both of my windows. You have to lift it and turn it up at the same time it will come up at an angle then become vertical and you pull it out. I can't think why it won't turn up. The rear doors on a 49 are the same size as the rear doors on my 51. As you are turning it upwards you have to angle it back towards you to make the conture of the door. And the glass goes back in the same way.

51hornetA, I believe you are right, it makes no sense to have to remove the channel to get the glass out. I removed the guides that the channel rests in to give me more room to tilt the glass up and down at the same time. With the guides and the channel out I still cannot tilt the glass to a vertical position. The glass has to come straight up in the same position as if it were still in the channel and then it comes right out through the top. I have held it half way up the door and tried to tilt one end and lower the other end, it will not turn inside the door. Believe me I have tried every angle, as soon as you tip the glass, the ends of the glass hit the front and rear of the door at the same time. I will take the other rear door apart tomorrow and see if the same situation is there. Thanks for your help 51hornetA, Richie.

According to the Hudson Body Manual, and my own limited experience on my '49 model, you do indeed take the glass and channel in and out together. It's not really all that bad to do.

If you're replacing the channel with new, then once you've got the originals out, you simply install the new channel by itself (starting at either end) in order to form the corners in the right places. Then remove it, slip the glass into it, and reinstall the two together.

    Good Luck

Hudsonguy, you make me feel a little bit better now. The only way I could get the window out was the way you explained. I just thought there might be an easier way. Don't want to take something apart that I don't have to. Thanks very much, Richie.

    Richie,

Don't be afraid to tear into that door. If you remove something extra and take it out, it gives you a reason to clean, treat and lubricate things! Those doors are very easy to assemble/ disassemble even a caveman can do it! Trust yourself. You'll be alright! Remember to check/ install new felt on the inside and outside of the door facing the glass or you'll soon have the dreaded deep scratches in your new glass!

7Xpacemaker, thanks, you make a good point. Actually I had everything out of the door, cleaned and rust-proofed before it goes back in. I cleaned and lubed the window reg. and latch assembly also. I am installing the channel kit from Victor Z. It has all the felt and channel pieces. It is really a quality kit, I like it. Thanks again 7Xpacemaker. Richie.

Hi Victor, I am in the process of installing your kit, your advice on bending the channel helped me a lot. I did experiment on my own and found a great way to bend it also. I practiced on the extra piece you gave me and that worked pretty good, no crimps !! It was a slow process, you have to take your time. The only thing I was worried about was the two SS strips looked like they might start to pull away from the fabric as I bent it around the glass, but that didn't happen, so all is well. No crimps-kinks or tears, rear doors will look good. Thanks for all your advice on the phone and e-mails Victor, I appreciate all the extra help. Richie. (great kit by the way)
  • I don't know if you know this little tip, but my glass guy told me to: go to both ends of each piece of glass run and make sure that the fabric covering is not stuck to the channel or the stainless strips. If need be , make a very small cut in the fabric to let it move on the run. It makes it much easier to bend the run, and keeps the stainless from twisting.

BJ TN, thank you for that tip. I have a lot left to do, I will keep that in mind. Richie.
