Site Admin: Please Fix The Thread Navigation!

rambos_ride
Senior Contributor
First I want to say to all that I love the site for it's people and content.
But as a DAILY user and contributor to this site - I hope you pay attention to this post and my concerns and not continue to ignore this problem. I say "continue" because I tried well over 6 months ago to have this problem fixed - only to be told that it's good enough...
For several months if not YEARS when you follow a forum thread you always have to hit the browsers "back" button navigation 2x to get to the topics list.
This is ANNOYING at best - throttles your bandwidth,at worst - and everyone here has just put up with it and kept their mouths shut - maybe I didn't sleep well, or maybe I got up on the wrong side of the bed today -but I'm saying something about it publicly... This is a simple fix and doens't need to happen!
PM me if you would like to know how to fix the navigation problems with
this website.
Sincerely
Dan Thompson

I agree Dan, its a pain or you have to go to the top and reclick the Hudson forum button.0
-
Dan, I might not be completely understanding the problem, but don't you simply have to scroll to the top of this page, to the "path" that reads
ClassicCar.com Forums > Orphaned, But Not Forgotten Marques > Hudson
....and select HUDSON?
Then you're back at the Hudson topics menu. (Or, if desired, hit CLASSICCAR.COM FORUMS to get to the main menu.)0 -

Jon is correct. After reading the posts go to the top of the page and click on "Hudson" in the line under HOME CLASSIFIED etc. This will take you back to the list of posts.
That said, however, I will admit to figuring it out myself recently.
Hudsonly,
Alex Burr0 -
I agree with you on this. This is the only forum that I frequent that you have to back up twice. I thought for a time it was something wrong with me. I am not a computer guru, but I figured out that it was a problem here.0
-
You are correct that you can hit the "hudson" tab up top, but what I (and I think Dan also) are talking about is if you're looking at threads on more than page one. If you are on page 3 and want to go back to see what you were looking at on page 2, and you hit the "hudson" tab above, it will take you back to page 1 instead of back to page 2. Hitting the back button is also usually quicker. I've worked around the issue, but it is unusual compared to any other forums I attend.0

Thanks Jon - and others for the comments and support!
MANY - MANY people use the mouse buttons to navigate forward and back on web pages - forcing people to scroll to the top of the page and click on a link is...well.. not a fix.
This should be a drop dead simple change to make and it would ENHANCE the user experience greatly!
I take it there must be someone out there who handles the coding work on this site? Where are they?0 -
I am sorry you all feel this way, but you should write Bill Gates and tell him. This is a documented Microsoft Internet Explorer bug. I hope you guys don't think we sit around here making it harder to use the forums. The vBulletin software we use here is in use by tens of thousands of users and this problem has been noted, along with other software programs other than this one.
Now, you can use FireFox (which I use) to avoid this problem. Its a faster, cleaner, and less buggy web browser and its free. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/0 -

Again - railing against Bill Gates is not the issue.
This is a simple programming fix
Telling people to use Firefox is not an acceptable workaround for a public domain website.
Let's get together and fix the problem instead of pointing fingers - eh?0 -

Could you detail this simple change, so that I can forward it to Microsoft?:D0 -
rambos_ride wrote:Let's get together and fix the problem instead of pointing fingers - eh?
The fact is that we simply are not able to reach into ever computer out there and change the fuction on the IE web browser. Even Microsoft has not been willing to fix this problem to date.
The Back command is a fuction of the web broswer, not the code on the website.0 -

What's your problem? I'm trying to point out an issue that many people dislike about the site. BTW - this happended sometime in the last 2 years because when I started at this site there wasn't a navigation problem.
Your attitude is not helping the situation. Chest thumping against IE, MS and Bill Gates does nothing but make you look bad.
This is not a MS fix - you can fix it in the code base.
Your ADVERTISING controls (probably IFRAME) or some asychronous JAVA code needs to not add the "ad urls" to the browser history list.
Is that simple enough or do you need some further explanation?0 -

I was taking you seriously. I welcome any efforts to make things better, however we pay for work performed here. I can contact you by email to setup you with access if you are still game.0 -

Well - you wouldn't know it based on your first few replies to this thread.
I was serious as well - send me an email and I'll be more than happy to help see if we can find a solution that works and makes the site better for all.

haha all the time I thought it was me not pushing the button hard enough! No really! Am I the only one that has to keep "refreshing" the pages and threads when I enter to get to curent goings on. That has got to be something on my end, ...NO? Can you tell me what I am doing wrong?0
-
I can see it now... Rambos, "will fix board for parts"
hehe....
Yeah, if he is talking about the lack of access to the smileys ad stuff when posting, that is annoying. I have that problem on every computer I post to this froum from, whether it is IE, Mozilla, Safari, Mac, PC... this seems to be a board issue, and happened after the last update.0 -
Whoa, whoa, whoa, guys!
Let's be civil here!
We're beholden to Classiccars for the use of this site, for which we don't pay a cent. If you have a constructive suggestion, it's great to offer it. And if you can indeed offer a fix for the Forum program Classiccar is using here, which will improve the site, I'm sure they'd be happy to hear about it.
But there's no need for sharp language!
Why not hit the CONTACT US link at the bottom, explain to the Admin in an e-mail how your 'fix' works, and find out if indeed the vBulletin software will take this revision?
If you can offer a free modification that's effective and works easily, I'm sure it would be of great advantage to Classiccar. If for some reason the 'fix' doesn't fit in with the software, then -- in the end -- that's Classiccar's call and we'll simply live with the slight inconvenience.0 -

Thank God I have a real job when I have to get up in the morning and go to work and get into a truck and for 8 or more hours do hands on work. You poor souls sit here and ***** about pushing a button more then once ???????? Where is this world coming to ???? I have been at my job for 30 years and the new young people that we are getting as new hires are not worth a heck. But they do know how to work a computer game. We work with High Voltage 4kv, 12kv, 16kv and up and to tell you the truth I would rather have a high school drop out that is willing to learn what 12 kv will do to you rather then know how to push a button twise. Go figure, Ron0 -

Hi Bent Metal - sorry the refresh issue you are experiencing is NOT related to this particular navigation issue.
Try checking your browser settings if you're using IE go to the menu Tools -> Internet Options.
On the General tab in the middle section you'll see "Temporary Internet Files" click on the settings button. There you can set how often the browser looks to see if the page has changed.
But - the drawback is slower page loads because the browser always checks upon navigation to see if the page changed rather than loading the currently cached page in history.
Hope that helps!0 -

What's the saying "Cooler heads always prevail!"
Ted has emailed me and we are starting a dialog to process the information and see what ~ if anything ~ can be done to help the current navigation problem.
If I'm wrong - I'll admit it - but hopefully I've learned a trick or 2 programming professionally for a over a decade (and then some...yikes!) and we can find a solution together.
Thanks all!0 -

Ron, that 8 hours of truck time is just your commute time in the SOCAL traffic right?0 -
OK, with the excellent help of Dan, I think we have this IE problem corrected. You all be the judge. Nav the pages and use the BACK button to go back and let us know if we still have a problem.
Thanks for the information from Dan and other Members. It was a big help, which is more than I can say about the Forum support techs. Anyway, I learned something....I hope it works well for you all too.

hey admins...
any way I can get privileges to post more than 4 pictures per thread????
It would help out a lot, especially with the amount of pictures I usually post.
just a thought...
and...
can we change the 30 second between posting rule???
just some open suggestions!
Best!

Excellent Work!
I honestly didn't do anything - it was all on your end!
Thanks for spending the extra time today to listen and help find a solution.

HudsonKid - I get around the 4 picture limit by just combining many into one...do you have Photoshop or something similar that you can adjust the canvas size?
That is unless you're upset because that limit includes the smiley's in your posts?
I'd only say just remember where the pictures are hosted and the bandwidth it takes to download for all of us downstream...I try to keep mine under 1mb
30 seconds isn't enough? I program for a living and don't type that fast (or should I say..."type well that fast") - it's hard to believe someone your size can type that fast...or do you have eveything lined up and do a cut-and-paste frenzy - the shotgun method of forum posting! BTW- I'm just funnin' you a little

Ok, you can post 10 in images. Please consider some people are still on dial-up and too many images SSSSSLLLLOOWWWS down loading. I dropped re-post to 10 sec for now. If we start seeing flood problems, we may have to put it back to 30 sec.0 -
thanks powers that be. It helps me out!
Goodguys is this weekend... might be posting all of those pics over in the SR forum!0 -

Ok, I logged into the site using Firefox. From what I can see I can still return to the main forum using the "Hudson" link at the top, as I did in IE, or I can use the back button to back up a page, ie, from page 3 to page 2, etc, etc.
Difference???????? Me don't know - all I know is it works for me.

An excellent fix. It's now much easier to navigate the threads.:)
Thanks to all concerned0
