I finally hooked up my radio tonight and everything lights up, dial light, tubes, etc. but I am getting no sound from the speaker. Tried two different speakers and still nothing, no static or sound of any kinds. The radio was rebuilt with a SS vibrator and supposedly should be working. Any ideas???

Thanks

  • Try going back to an OE vibrator, I have read that some solid state vibrator have been troublesome - Is your vehicle + ground?

Yep standard + ground. I also heard sometimes you need to tap a vibrator tube to get it to start working also?
  • Do not tap the SS vibrator that will not get it working only potentially damage it. I replaced my vibrator with SS works like a charm know a couple of Hud guys with same unit. Have you tested all of your tubes? sometimes they will light and still be weak. But in that case you should still get static. Is the vibrator seated correctly and are all the capacitors ok and check the speaker wires to make sure there are no contact breaks...

Will be interested in your fix for this, as my Jet radio doesn't work either. Just stopped. Antenna is plugged in , vibrator is humming, valves are glowing, and no noise. My knowledge of valve radios is - If the valves are glowing they are probably okay, if they are not glowing they are shot, and if they are glowing brightly they are not going to work for much longer!

No, just because the heater filament lights up doesn't mean the tube is good! Most all tube failures do not involve the heater filament. Turn the volume all the way up. You should hear some noise. If not, you have a bad power supply (The vibrator is a part of the power supply) or bad output amplifier (assuming the speaker is good). I would first substitute a known good vibrator. If that didn't work, I would see if I could find a tube tester and test all the tubes. If this doesn't work you are going to need to get a Sam's Photofact for your radio. A Photofact is a schematic and other data needed to test and repair your radio. Or send your radio to the repair shop.

Right, I'll add to my knowledge list on valves - "glowing does not necessarily indicate working ability!" Thanks for the tip. I'll try a new vibrator, as I have ojne of thosel, bur as far as a tube tester and photofact goes, I'll search around for a rocking horse dung shop as well! The speaker is fine. If I wiggle one of the valves, the speakers crackle. Unfortunately old-fashioned radio technicians are thin on the ground in this neck of the woods. I know about transistors, but valves have me whacked! Is there anyone out there to whom I could send my radio for repair?
