Center steering bearings
Hi all,
I finally got the vibration dampener nut off the '41!! Thank you all for your suggestions. Now I am one step closer to getting to those center steering bearings. I removed the center steering nut, and assumed that the bolt would easily come out the top. Wrong!! It won't budge. I am able to turn it with a wrench with a lot of effort, but it does not want to come out. Is this bolt pressed in? Should I drive it out with a punch? I know I may seem a little cautious here, but I learned the hard way that it is much better to ask first than to ruin something and ask later. Thanks.

I don't think the bolt comes out. Once the nut is removed the two pieces should pull apart. That is the frame backet should pull out of the linkage part. Do you have copy the March/April 2006 of the White Triangle News? It has an excellent article on repairing the center point steering0

I believe that is the case for the stepdowns. I am not sure if that is true for the '41. It appears to be a different setup.0

OK have you tried removing the backet from the frame and then try to pull the two parts apart. Point being you want seperate the two. So the question is why do you need to remove the bolt?0

Unlike the later Hudsons, the bracket is riveted to the frame and cannot be removed. According to the procedure manual for 41's, the bolt must be removed through the top to seperate the center steering arm from the bracket. The problem is that the bolt is either pressed in or worse yet bent, as it will spin but will not come out.0

I would say you are right in that bolt is probably bent or is possible the bolt has a step worn in it and you are hangup on the step? I am sure its not pressed in because the bolt turns. I would try driving it out, but don't breakout the sledgehammer yet.0

You will have to drive that bolt out but be careful you do not peen it over for you will be in big trouble. The bolt is frozen in the inner bushing. Try soaking it for a few days before you hammer it. Use a brass punch. You will find that you will need machine work when it gets to this point. Also before you reinstall, drill and tap for a grease fitting. This is the way I do all repairs on 40 to 47. Hudson then in 1948 up did the same thing. Walt.0
