rebuilt carbs

Is there anywhere else besides Kanters that can supply exchange rebuilt Carter WA-1 carbs.

I'd like to get a couple done up quickly, and exchange seems to be the fastest way, (other than rebuilding these ones myself).

  • Ryan,

here is a Canadian company that does a good job on carbs. Some of my friends have had carbs rebuilt and exchanged here.

  • Thanks Paul,

You bet I'll tell 'em you sent me !! Maybe good for discount ? Haah -- just kidding. :-)

I've been to his shop and seen the detail that he puts into his carbs. He does more than just throw a "kit" in them if they need it. It may not be a 7 day turnaround, but I bet you the carb will have exact or better tolerances and operate better than new!

They did one for me for around $200 - great job, runs fine, and looks brand new. All new screws etc, returned to original colors. Can't say enough good about it. Wish I didn't have an air cleaner hiding it! But it wasn't a seven day turn around. Walt-LA
  • I recieved a reply from them yesterday, and apparently the shop backlog is about nine weeks.

They don't have WA-1's in stock for exchange but by the look of the quality of workmanship, it'll be worth the wait to send them a pair of my own, and get them done.

Should have done this last fall, when I wasn't wanting to drive my car for the summer !! Maybe I'll send them another pair I have, and keep them in stock for next winter's project, and use mine as is for now
  • Another place to try is:

    Kar-Go Carburetor, INC

    ATTN: Rebuilder

    30952 Ford Road

    Garden City, MI 48135

    734-425-4590

I used them as it was about half the price of Daytona (at the time in December 2006). It cost $129.95 plu shipping both ways. I used UPS for about $20 total. They did my 749S up real nice. It was returned with settings already to install. I have not had to make any adjustments.

Turn around time was about 6 business days plus shipping time (2 there, 3 back).

    Just another option to consider.

I was thrilled with the results of their workmanship, testing, communication, fast turn around time and fair price. Mine came back looking and working like new. I've also used Culver city Carb in CA. The owner is into racing. He and his staff know carbs. Sometimes, you get what you pay for. If your smart and shop around, you'll get more than you pay for.

Antique Parts Cellar (see ad in WTN) talks a good talk. Only experience is purchasing a diaphragm from them.

Have a 4 barrel Rochester on my '56 Hudson with Packard v8, will not pay Daytona Carburator price of over $400 ! Am looking for a good rebuilder at a "reasonable" price!

Since you're in Nevada, why not try Culver City Carbs in CA. You should be pleasantly surprised with their prices and quality of work.

Small world, aye. Your welcome. BTW, this is a business where if you ask, you can actually talk to the owner. I can't remember his name at the moment, but he (the owner) and I talked several times while his shop was doing a Rochester 4bbl for me. If your in a hurry and they have your model in stock, they can do an exchange. But, if you're like me, you'll want your original carb back. Either way, it's no problem for them. Good luck.

    Dave,

Where are you located? I am about 20 miles from Culver City. Your timing here couldn't be better. I got my WA1's going pretty good on my Hornet, but having a bad time with my old Holley/Ford 2 bbl's I am trying to do a twin carb on for my 51 Ford PU flathead V8. Vacuum port is stripped on one, which I plugged and I still can't get it to idle right. My mixture screws look worn which may be the problem? If you can come up with a number and a name,I would very much like to run this by them.

    Thanks,

    Rob

    Thanks Dave,

I thought you might be local. I am heading to the midwest tomorrow. Flying into Chicago then up to our plant in Wisconsin.

    You're welcome.

Have a safe trip. The temperatures there will be in the high 60's to mid 70's with the possibility of a little rain thrown in for good measure. In addition to their fine dairy products, Wisconsin is known for having quite a few Hudnuts.
  • 464 saloon, interesting you have a 51 ford Pu , I have a 51 Mercury pick up with the flathead v8.

Sundem Carb in Minnesota is a great place too if you want 50 years of experience. 2227 Whitebear Ave., Maplewood MN 55109

651-770-3505. About $170 and discount for twins. They don't rebuild carbs like this they re-manufacture them to original specs. That's not clean and kit work, it's all passages drill matched, ports, fittings, hardware, gaskets, checks, the whole shoot'n match. Ask for Pat and tell him you are a Hudson Club member and I sent ya. You don't get charged more or less by mentioning me, but you do get preferential treatment. Terry retired from there and runs a resort now and he has passed along his 30 years experience to the 30 years ex still there. Good gas'in. ;)

  • Thanks Bob,

I've got several sets to rebuild, so maybe I'll give them a couple to see how they do.

    I'll mention you referred me,
it never hurts to have friends in the right places! When I get them back, I'll post the results here. I'm sure they'll do a perfect job.

That's a pretty rare bird. My Dad has a 50 PU that I built a pretty trick flathead for, he hasn't finished the rest of the resto so it has driven yet, but it sure sounds good. I also have a 55 that I restored with the Y-block and overdrive.
