To heavy a wire is not the problem. If you were using too light of wire you would experience resistance and the wire would get hot. According to my wiring diagram, Generator "F" Terminal to Regulator "F" Terminal should be 16 gauge. Generator "A" Terminal to Regulator "A" Terminal should be 12 gauge. Hope this helps.

Vettguy, did this generator work before?,or do you know?.Do you have a shop manual?.This system is very simple. Most of these cars had a higher amp charging system,[1953-1954]and must have a voltage regulator that is the same or matching part for the amp output.A simple test to see if the Gen. is working or have some output is to take the belt off or make sure that there is no interference with the pulley, jump battery power to the ARM post on the gen. This should make it turn over.If it turns,it should make power when driven. The shop manual has very good instructions on how to diagnose these problems.I'm sure there are others on here much more knowledgable than myself that can guide you through the trouble shooting and repair.Park W.is one of them.:)0
