fuel pump 55 Hornet

Here I go again, it seems that after sitting about 5 years and working while I was getting things going the fuel pump decided to give up the ghost. Is it best to rebuild or buy another? Mine looks to be a double pump, I'm guessing vacuum operated though it is mounted to the engine block there is a vacuum line coming from the top of the pump to the exhaust manifold. Who makes or sells a rebuild kit?. It is my guess the rubbers got old sitting dry and then with all the running I've been doing lately it decided to let go. Does this sound feasible?

  • The fuel pump is mechanical and the vacuum connection (should be to intake manifold) is part of the double action pump which supplied vacuum to the wipers. Try HET Club member Dave Kostansek for your fuel pump needs.

Dave is a great source of fuel and water pumps for Hudsons....also Bill Albright in California. Keep in mind that some of today's fuel blends will ruin the gaskets on older fuel pumps (ones that have been more recently rebuilt, will have the newer type gaskets which resist ethanol, etc.). So make sure you either get a newly-rebuilt pump or use new materials to rebuild your own. Don't buy a NOS pump that's been sitting on the shelf for 40 years, even if the price is right!

Many Hudson suppliers advertise in the WTN, and you can also find the names and addresses of some on Dave Sollon's excellent website, under SUPPLIERS. http://home.earthlink.net/~dsollon/public.htm/
  • THANKS jON, HE IS A CLOSE BY NEW MEMBER AND HAS BEEN TAKEN CARE OF bill albright
  • Bill took great care of me, I put the new pump on and it didn't suck fuel either though it was definitely pulling, so I pulled the new one and put the old one back on. I blew back through the fuel line and now have flow so I need to drain the tank and get any bugs who may have moved in while the car was down, out. Something floated up and plugged the pick up and though I am an optomist I don't believe it will never float back up again. When I got it running I got it tuned closer but there seems to be a vacuum leak somewhere, and the tranny still seems to randomly quit working sometimes and other times it works fine, drain and change on the trans fluid also. It sure would be nice to drive this car soon.

    Harry,

More than likely, you have rust in your fuel lines. If you have a compressor and small vacuum pump (like for bleeding brakes and checking vacuum devices), you can disconnect the fuel line at the front of the car and alternate between applying compressed air and suction to it. Although you'll clear the blockage, you'll probably clog up again. The best bet is to flush the tank and replace your metal fuel lines. You'll be glad you did.

    Harry,

You were sitting for 5 years and working? Do you have a government job?
  • Ah, I should be more clear in what I write, the car was sitting for five years, then I fired it up and now it's been running or working for the last few weeks.

I did have a government job though for 13 years, I'm not proud of it but it's still part of my history.
