Rear axle
An interesting question came up with my brother and a buddy of mine that has a transmission shop. Did Hudson make different axles housings for different gear ratios. For example I have the 4.56 rear end and since it is a 54 I have some options to install a different ratio. How tall can I go ratio wise? I have an complete 3.07 axle lined up but can I keep my original axle and put a 3.07 in it or is the housing different and have to change the whole thing?

The Parts Manual lists only one Housing assy for '52 - '54 stepdowns. However, there is a separate listing for "Severe Usage" Housing assy.0

my 52 mech. proc. manual shows 2 rearends the welded cover type(in mine w/OD) and a rear cover type(I have one out of a hydro[3.07]). after all the talk about this lately i've decided to switch them, will the gears and axles swap? I know the axle splines are different.
if not does anyone have a junk rear cover type that i could get the panhard mount from. thank you.

Walt,
I don't think so at leat from what I am learning so far. Up until 52 the axles were Hudson after that they were Spicers. But like I said I am on the learning curve here.
Bill,
Sent you a second pm on the manifold. Your post in this thread was inappropriate.0 -

You can swap the whole assembly over as a complete unit, but there is nothing interchangeable between the two types internally.
