used wiring harness needed

A friend of mine is rewiring a 1948 Commodore 6 with a 308 and the wiring's bad. It will take weeks to get one from Y N Z's so he's going to try to make one up himself. The existing wiring is only partially there, so it's impossible to use it for a pattern in making the new harness.

If you have a decent (complete, even if frayed or messed up) wiring harness for this car, could he buy or rent or borrow it? He'll be glad to send it back.

But he needs it pretty soon, so if you know of anything please drop me a line! Thanks!

    Jon:

I just finished rewiring my 52 commodore 8, including engine compartment, under dash, and body harness, still have light pigtails to do. My harness was missing, so I did it by following the schematic in the shop manual and just ran a wire from point A to B. Then a gathered all the wires togeather into a harness. I used Eastwood vinyl wire harness tape, but next time I will look into YnZ's harness tape as it is rubber.

I did make a couple of changes, I installed a dual circuit head light relay and I put in a fuse block powered off the acc terminal on the ignition switch to power accesories like radio, heater, etc.

I ordered my cloth wire from Rhode island and received it within 2 to 3 days. I soldered, crimped and shrink tubed all the terminals and splices. I did have some problems with the turn signals, but the guys here on the forum helped me with that. I do have some pictures if you are interested.

Also you can check with Hudzilla, I believe he rewires Hudsons and may be able to make a harness for your friend faster than YnZ.

Have you checked how much $ a wiring harness is now for a complete stepdown rewiring from both Rhode Island, and XYZ? BIG BUCKS!!

Thanks Pat, I'll pass along the information.

Incidentally, I don't know if you were aware of it or not, but they still make that black asphant cloth wire loom material in various diameters. It looks 'period' authentic and when you stuff several plastic-coated wires within it, one would never know that they were modern (til they poke out the other end, hee-hee!). I simply taped my wires together under the dash (where no one would see them) and where they WERE visible (like in the engine compartment) I housed them within the black loom material.

Here's one place that sells it in small lengths: http://search.stores.ebay.com/HOMEPRO-FASTENERS_split-loom_W0QQfciZ6QQfclZ4QQfromZR10QQfrtsZ0QQfsnZHOMEPROQ20FASTENERSQQftsZ2QQsaselZ50248673QQsofpZ0

Spot on... there is no part of a Hudson Stepdown wiring harness that can not be done by a determined hobbiest. Making the harness look original will require added work... but if it is utility and reliability... a hudson wiring diagram provides all the wire sizes, basic routing and connections.

Please post your in progress and final pictures... if you have a comprehensive set of pictures and want to put together a how to do ... I will work with you and post same to my website.

  • send to hudzilla, he will gladly send you a wiring diagram, for which i am certainly grateful, while re wiring your car yourself is not exactly a snap (luckily hudsons are pretty basic but pay lots of attention take take plenty of notes!) it sure is a lot cheaper and you can add those touches like relays for the headlights and maybe some spare wires for say speakers or an electric fuel pump or even flamethrowers if you're into that sort of thing haha. my fusebox is a modern unit but it is very compact and once i make a little cover no one will be the wiser. to house my looms i first wrapped them and then put them in woven fiberglass tubing that expands and contracts with the thickness of the loom, it is held in place with adhesive lined heatshrink.im not sure how much that stuff is since i got it free from my friendly auto elec

I'm Not So Sure That Building A Wireing Harness Your Self Will Be That Much Cheaper Than Buying One. The New Cloth Covered Plastic Wire Is Not Cheap And Your Going To Need Alot Of Different Sizes And Colors And Then You Need The Different Ends I Bought Mine From Y&z I Would Not Buy From Them Again As The Harness You Get Will Be Ok But It Will Not Be The Same Color Wires That The Orignal Harness Was

Rhode Island Wireing Does A Great Job And All The Wires Are The Same Color As The Orignal Harness I Have To Carry Another Schematic
  • Get some wire of your chioce & replace one wire at a time, then tape it up!
  • Being on the side of functional, rather than authentic, I opted to go to my local home depot, and picked up all of the colors and sizes I would need, per the schematic, and rewire as I come across each area. Not cloth, but at least it is the right guage, and proper color. I don't have a ton in it, and it is fairly easy to do.

Jon, I have a used, 52 Wasp wiring harness. It was worth saving at the time I parted out the car, but It would need some TLC to be put back in a car. It isn't anyway near the same as the one you are looking for... but I do have it! (wire lengths for front end as well as the gage locations and types and rear lights are different. Interior lights are different as well. Just thought I would note it here even though it wont's do your friend any good...someone might need it
