Dan,
Since you're from the general area, what do you think the chances are that the chassis is in good shape? Price would be great if the car didn't require extensive rust repairs.0 -

It's hard to say - really depends more on how it's been stored and what kind of gunk has built up. The pictures don't show a ton of surface rust but I'd want to see more pictures and talk to the owner.
It's not the moisture that causes the frames to rot - it's all the dirt and junk that gets caught in the pockets and holds the moisture in a certain spot - or leaks that cause water to puddle in places like the floors...
Cumberland is about 120 mile round trip for me and with traffic probably close to a 4-5 hour turnaround drive - so it's close but not so close to take a casual look - maybe another forum HET member is closer to Cumberland?
I'd take a runner with some rust issues for less than 3k anyday - I find it hard to imagine it being worse than the car I got from Palm Springs given my cars extensive surface/underneath rust.
And this car looks nothing like some of the 'verts we've seen brought back from the brink!0 -

What you say is true. It's the junk that holds moisture against the metal that is the real culprit.
With gas prices being what they are, I doubt few of us will be driving 120 miles round trip on a whim.
If the cars runs and doesn't have major rot issues, $3k isn't bad. I bet the issues with your car being from Palm Springs were a real (bad) surprise.
You're right about some of the converts. I'm in awe of the people who take them on as a personal project.0 -

Yeah - Palm Springs CA I was hoping the rust wasn't as bad, but the car was from Sturgis South Dakota originally so I'd bet alot of my car's issues started from there.
I paid 1650 for mine fairly complete but not running and as it turned out the motor was frozen, missing parts, wiring etc...but honestly if mine had been running I would have kept the flathead and not gone the route I did.0 -

With the rust and other issues you've had to deal with, it figures that your car originally hailed from the snow belt.
Well, some people may say you got a good deal and some may say you didn't. However, who among us can say that every car we bought was a great buy. Sometimes, a toad comes along. Correct me if I'm wrong, didn't you buy your car sight unseen? If so, the seller must have been an indiot or crook not to mention at leat some of the thing that were wrong. I would rather have a seller say they don't know anything than to say whatever it takes to make the deal.0 -

I think - given my limited knowledge of Hudson values - think I paid about 500.00-800.00 too much.
I don't really fault the people I got the car from because looking at the car "on the surface" it was pretty solid. It was after I got home and relentlessly went around it tearing things apart and probing areas with a hammer pick and screwdriver ~ did the full extent of the rust issue become visible.
The best thing about my experience with my Hudson is knowing what to look at the next time I get one - and I plan on having as many more as I can!0 -

If the fault was yours, you're an honest man to lay they blame at your own door step. And, as they say, experience is the best teacher. Next time, you'll know what to look for and sharing your experiences can help others avoid the same mistake.0 -
If anyone wants someone to look at this car I am about an hours drive away and I am going down to purchase a 67 cougar XR7 on Sunday in the same area. I looked at this car when it came up but I am only allowed to buy 3 cars a year and I still need to get a 60's era truck.0

Well - I guess you can place the fault on me - since I bought it sight unseen on ebay!
But I'll just re-iterate rust can be a strange thing in that it may look solid on the surface - but until you put some pressure or probe against it you won't really know the extent or depth.
Most sellers would look at you in absolute horror (and/or go get their shotgun) if you showed up with a mining helmet and pick and hammer to probe the strength of Hudson frame rails
JSRail can vouch for this as well - his car looked absolutely beautiful until he started poking around and pulling parts off.
I just think this car is priced well and the owner is probably willing to strike a deal (hence the Or Best Offer) and if it does have some structural issues and you showed it to them - I bet you'd get a decent deal.0 -

That's an awesome offer, see - its good folks like you that made me want to get back my roots with cars again after 25 years of trucks and 4x4's. :cool:0 -

At least you admit your mistakes.
You're right about rust, sometimes it doesn't rear its ugly head until you start getting into the car.
As the saying goes, the car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.0 -

I bought mine thru Hemmings, but the same story. But 2 door Coupes in seemingly great shape were so hard to find and I kept getting outbid on eBay, so I bought it. Wish I would have thought about joinging the HET Club first, but didn't manage to find this website until after my purchase.
As others have said "live and learn." I took the easier way out than Dan though, I got a donor shell. But Dan is much more skilled at fab than I will ever be I'm sure! I'm still glad I bought my Coupe and enjoy being on this forum, its never a dull moment!
Now, if only I could find that trailer............................
