Black Beauty
Ray, We both Goofed on that one. ( Black Beauty)
We did find the cause of Low-Power on the 308 engine, just the other day.
That 308+ had a Iske 446 cam and when i rebuilt the Hydra. I failed to install the JET fluid coupling ,instead i installed a 1954 Pontiac coupling.
That lowered the Stall RPM to much for the 446 cam. The JET coupling that i used in Racing the 308 is smaller + i increased the Gap between the two couplings as this would bring the Stall RPM to 1800 to 2100 RPM and that would let the cam work comming of the Line+we were running the T0-4 Turbocharger and boy would that Lift the Front end a bit for weight on the rear wheels. (we found the Jet couplings the other day, still in the box where i put them) I am having a lot of Forget what i am doing lately, and that is why the 53 had a big top-end bet was a little slow on take-off.
Let me know when you get this one ready as i may be in Lost Wages at that time.

Good Morning Brother Bennett,
No problem Rudy, we'll just have to buy the car back and, get rid of 1954 Pontiac coupling and install the proper Jet fluid coupling, "Black Beauty" was still a great car and your 40 plus years of Caterpillar experience helped build along with your son Rick and the old Hudson race hands from the garage the solid 55-56 Twin- H with Iskie cam, MSD engine. I stilll wish I had this car. This is first time I am getting away from original Twin-H Hudson drive train and already purchased new/rebuilt crated 350 Chevy engine, JEGS aluminum radiator with cooler kit, rebuilt Corvette 700R4 transmission, Fatmanfabs front end kit already installed (as you know power steering is must have for me) and probably Ford 9" rear end using Currie Brother's kit (not yet confirmed or purchased) therefore I'll have power disc brakes on all four, oh yes Vintage A/C, with EZ 21 - 18 circuit harness, already purchased NOS Hudson exterior sunvisor with proper brackets, other than front two directional bezels and pork chops. Every piece of chrome, pot metal stainless steel removed has been either plated or professionally polished, already have all six pieces of flat glass cut in safety solar tint and will buy L/R new windshield glass like you did soon. Also purchased from new Ford Mustang; take off wheels and tires with less than 200 miles on them, purchased like new sweet smelling Cadillac rear leather seat (I'll put it on eBay later on) but have since changed my mind and will have George reupholster (he did my last four cars + "Black Beauty") original Hudson front & rear seats (still looking for stripped material, do you have any recommendations) going to base and clear coat paint job the car using Lexus maroon & creme as two tone combination. Trying to keep the intergity of Hudson exterior/interior with modern easy to find reliable replacement parts drive train etc.
Rudy everything is waiting for you to complete project so ya all come to Vegas not to lose wages, only kidding. When you come I'll buy you the biggest steak dinner at the best steak house in town and you know I am always happy to hear and see you.
Hudsonly,

Rudy, forgot to mention and I know you were looking for a steering wheel, I had mine rebuilt, cost was a little expensive ($350.-) however it came out magnificent, just in case you want to find out more following is his name Lauren Mately and email is fixold@hotmail.com ...Rudy I'll like to buy: in your travels if you happen to see glass insert from interior custsey light not the center but one on interior roof, and knob at the end of hydrmatic selector handle I could use one.
Thanks, Pal Ray0 -
Ray,what color knob for the slector lever?
and is the glass for the inside light clear and is it above the dash ?

Pal Rudy
Rudy, Knob is maroon and the glass is clear not the large one above the center of dash, but the smaller side one.
Thanks Pal,

I will go to Farm this week end and look see.

Hi Rudy I was wondering if you moght have any parts for a 54 Hornet Hollywood . I need
1 backup light lens { used}
Ivory steering wheel
Ivory inside antenna knob
Ivory signallight lever knob
dogs legs& gravel guards for Hollywood
duncan PS Hows the turbo working.0 -
Thanks Duncan, I have no 54 Hollywood parts at this time, but will ask around and if i find some will get back to you. Have you tired Al Saffren,i think there was a write-up in latest WTN ?
The 46 Turboed 262 has been racking up the miles and doing lots of every day town and HWY miles. I will be testing it for Top-Speed and a rolling start with a Worn 54 with 308 engine by next week-end.
Then i will make a report for all to see, been getting calls and emails on how the testing is doing. ( wanted to test it with our 100 degree temp and it is hitting that now) Due to a diff ratio of 273 and a WEAK cork clutch we will drag race it with the 308 54 car of another local owner.

Hey Rudy thanks How do I get a hold of Al Saffren

Rudy,
any way I can use my stepdown as a test mule for them engines you guys build? SOmething in a turbo or Supercharged would suit well.0 -
Thanks Hudson Kid but we are having much fun this way, some of them see the Turbo decals and think its all a joke until that hood is tilted foward or hear that Exit Pipe in the rear. Then they ask why a Flat-Head-Hudson?
My Reply,is Why Not.
So far the head gasket and Con-Rods are still in position.

me and hudsondad were talking about this, just curious, why not supercharged?0

Thanks a lot just what I needed. Rudy what is the purpose of the black curved pipe between turbo and two barrel Holly carb.( looks like gas well pipe) with bolt flanges is it for better fuel mixing .
duncan0 -
Another question Rudy Would you be able to send me a drawing or
make me a adaptor outof alluminum or whatever you used to adapt
the turbo intake to the single two barrel Hudson intake give me a price.
duncan0 -
The Supercharger that i ran on a 1954 308 of many years back was sold to Mark Hudson and i think he is fitting it to a hudson engine at this time. ( it was a Paxton)
I worked for Caterpillar for 45 years and installed many Turboes on all types of Diesel engines so,it was so natural for me to stick with Turbochargers plus the engines are not Stressed in an over-load until you need to press the Pedal to the Metal, then it comes to life. Just normal driving the boost guage does not show any boost,no extra load on power train.
Duncan, I dont have the drawing on the Alum. block at this time. And the curved pipe was made to allow the hood to close.(hood bracket in the way)
When in a 48-54 the Carb Adaptor is bolted to the Compressor housing along with carb.
When all testing is done i will send complete Instructions and Pictures to Sam Jackson to be printed in the HET-Mag. (he was in town a few weeks back and saw the installation and took pictures) Along with some of the things that I should have done ,that was not done.

I'm slow-walking the supercharger installation to get a better handle on the baseline tune of the 4-barrel. That and two major barriers are still in my way, Time and Money.
Here's a link to an album I made for Rudy's fantastic Hudson modifications, right here on Classicar.com
The turbo outfit and the McCulloch mockup he sent me that sent shivers down my backbone.

Thanks Rudy Will you have instructions to mount this to my 54 Hollywood.
308 motor. Would the kickdown linkage adapt easily. And throttle linkage. duncan0 -
Duncan, I used the T/V rod that is used on the HYDRA .and from the Hudson bell-crank to the carb. ( works just fine)
Thanks Rudy.0 -
Hey Rudy. This is sounding better all the time. I have the complete setup
with 4 barrel carb given to me. When you mounted the adaptor to your
single 2 barrel Hudson intake did youcut out the baffle in between the two
holesin the intake where the carb sits on. Its hard for me to explain on here.
Here's another way I will try to ask my question The intake to carb gasket
for Hudson carb has two holes in it divided. Did you take out that divider
in the intake. Thanks duncan0 -
Duncan, Take a grind stone and grind the center Baffle down about 1/2 inch and taper-blend it. The adaptor center hole needs to be the size of the Compressor hole that feeds the Hudson Manifold. Tappering the center baffel in the Hudson manifold will let the Compressor wheel Flow Evenly to the front and rear cylinders. ( did not take pictures of the manifold or adaptor while it was being made, I will be removing it later in Year to do that. (its so much fun now I hate to remove it ) You cant go wrong because the Turbo or Supercharger is a EQUALIZER and they both will push the Mixture Through any Hole ,and will mix the Air-Fuel Ratio by the time it hits the valves.
Hope this helps.
I will start a new Thead on todays Drag race between a 54-308 and the 46 262 in a while.
Thanks to all Rudy and tha Locals.0
