Water pump rebuild question

If you're going to rebuild a water pump, with new seals, check the surface the seal bears on very carefully. I did a 308 waterpump (about 30 years ago!!), put in the new seal, etc - and it still leaked. Off with the pump, pull it apart - and, oh, yeah, the sealing surface was pitted and worn with slight grooves cut into it.
Solution - believe it or not I was able to chuck it into the big lathe we had in the machine shop on the ship I was on (USCG) and turned it down - very carefully. Why it didn't come flying off that lathe, I'll never know. Divine intervention??
In any event it worked - pump went back together and did NOT leak.
See your local machine shop - if they say it can't be done, tell 'em it can, and you know an idiot that did it. Hey, what can I say - nobody told me those things were built in such a manner you CAN'T chuck them up in a lathe (hint - I used a 4-jaw chuck.)

Yeah, I have the bearing #s.. Somewhere. Hudson may be the same as Pontiac from the same vintage. For some reason I was thinking the bearing and shaft are purchased together as a unit. I'm storing too much information to remember everything.0 -
Bearings are a standard water pump bearing 5/8"shaft x 30mm bearing, available from just about any bearing shop.
You will be able to adapt a modern pool pump seal if you can't find an original.
As Alex said, its important to make sure that the surface the seal mates with is in good condition. If the mating surface has to be cut down a long way to achieve a good surface, press in a small stainless boss to restore the mating surface to the right height.
One way of mounting the water pump in a lathe is to fit a piece of 30mm round into the bearing housing and secure it with a grub screw through the drain hole.0
