I'd question any car that was original that someone threw a quickie paint job on to sell.

Chances are they are trying to cover something up - I'd want to see the car in person and/or pictures of the door jambs, floor boards and as always the perimeter frame rails.
  • We have members down in Tucson if anyone wants someone to look at it, I'm sure someone would.

Overpriced? No offense, but you area little behind on prices! If it is what the owner says that it is, it is a decent price. Have you priced a 40K mile engine lately? how about all new side glass and weatherstrips? I understand that everything is not BRAND new, but geez! A fair paint job is 3K, weatherstip is 1K, replating front and rear bumpers is around 1K, New glass is 500, a harness is around 1K, and you haven't even bought a body yet! My dad cringed when he found out what I paid for a new 4 core radiator($650), he told me he remembers buying entire cars for half of that! Bottom line is this- costs are high to restore/ fix up ANY car these days. Was the new paint job done to hide something? All paint jobs hide things like factory dings and defects such as imperfections in the tooling, accidents in the factory, etc. The roof on my sedan had 7 FACTORY dings in it repaired at the factory! Sorry about the rant, I just am a litttle digusted at what I have put into my car! I just dropped off my seats, door panels, and SMS's upholstery at the trim shop and will have over $4200 in the interior alone!

Thanks for the advice. If there is someone down in Tucson area who could check out the car in the next day or two that would be great. If it is what the guy claims I think I am interested.
  • I just hope I hit the Powerball tomorrow so I can buy them all!!!!!!!!

  • I would bet that AL Saffrahan will know the car... Tuscon is about 45 miles south of the Saffrahan estate. @ 520-568-2911

Saw the car this afternoon. I would say that it's a #4. Interior needs headliner Some pitting on the chrome trim, Radio is some modern thing hooked up to an aux battery(12V) wiring replaced but it is modern vinyl coated, Lens is missing for the gauges & steering has some moderate play. Engine is strong ,and in the 90s was bored 040 over. Trans was rebuilt by the same shop Chirco Auto of which most car folks know in Tucson.Glass is good, and much rubber is from K-Gap. Maybe Press knows about it. Chassis is solid, but the floor pans need replacing. The car sports a $300 Macco paint job, but the chrome is good, as is the fender trim and rockers. No rust.I did not drive the car so I'll have to take "Eddies" word that the trans is good as well as other drivability issues. His starting price of $8000 is too high. If this car interests you, I would let it pass and offer $6000 later. If you need to talk to me I'm in the roster. Also, the owner had a bunch of cards from Al Saffrahn and Dick Bell. I have the owners Phone # if you are interested.Ron Sotardi

Like I said before, especially now that the truth comes out about the 3 hundered dollar crap Maaco paint job...it will dull out or peel within 6 months - and you will now need to strip it down to bare metal, as a new paint job is only as good as what's underneath!

I stand by what I said in an earlier post it's virtually gauranteed they are trying to cover something up. Usually that something is the car was hammered in an accident, or rusted out - or worse both  Jay has some experience with buying a car that someone painted to cover up the rust - he had to buy a donor car.

It may have a lot of new rubber and parts but unless you take it as is and drive it - you are looking at a complete teardown and restoration to make it decent.

And let's also be honest about a motor that is 40 over with 40k (??) on it - it ain't gonna last ~ and you have no way to know who did the work and no gaurantee.

Thanks for the inspection. I owe you. I agree it is overpriced, so I will pass. What I really want in a 52 or 53 Hornet with standard transmission, anyway. And not something that needs this much work.

I totally agree a cheap paint job is only to cover up badness.

Thanks everyone for your long distance help.

Your so right Dan! Especially out here in the Kalahari, it don't last at all. That's why I'm looking at buying paint that will have the durability you need tp keep from having to repaint every 3-5 years!

Well I paid 7000 for my 54 Hornet 2 dr sedan and I have to have at least 4500 in repairs and upgrades and that's not counting my labor, which has been most of it. Engine just blew in it and I am looking so far at at least 2500 in parts, then the machining costs, then my time to assemble and put back in. Of course it needs a new clutch and I am having the trans gone through because I am sure with the way things have gone on this car, it will go next. So let's say I would need a good $20,000.00 to come close to break even and it still should have a suspension rebuild, new wiring harness, new paint job, rest of chrome and trim redone, rubber, glass, and badging. All of it is tired. Sounds like a wreck, but really isn't. Looks fair and drives pretty decent now. Lesson learned, never buy a car sight unseen through the internet based on pictures and owners description. I never will again.
