essex transmision oil
what is the proper lube to use in my essex transmision? also what seals the drain plug on the bottom of the transmision? i removed it and it was just a bolt with a spring, seems like something is missing. there was no oil in my trans, hopefully this is part of the reason it wouldnt go into gear.

Use a 90 grade transmission oil. There should be a fibre washer under the head of the drain plug. there are no seals in these transmissions and they do tend to pump the oil out when they get a bit worn. Keep it topped up and you should have no problems.

Wear in the rear gearbox bearing ( espec if you have a sloppy front universal) can cause oil to be pumped out of the box with dire results. I learnt the hard way!! Check that your drive shaft universals are not causing vibration. Some folk suggest that non EP oils should be used to avoid any problems between the bushes & the steel shafts. As Geoff says 90 grade works well.0 -
ok thats what i was thinking, 90w and i was going to punch a gasket out of some gasket material.0
