Looking for new paint ideas!!!
Well, I've thought it over and I think I'm going to skip the marron metallic color for the Coupe. Its seems that there are a lot of deep red/maroon Huds out there and I don't want it to look like so many others. Not that those colors are bad, I'm just wanting to be a bit different.
So any suggestions? Can anyone throw up (woaw what a pun!) a pphoto shop of a coupe with some cool colors on it? (Boy I see where this question is going to get me! lol).
I used to want lime green mettalic on my '42 Ford P/U.....maybe that's a place to start. I want ghost flames, so your paint choice must work within that perameter. No scallops, those are for my '56 Custom Royal. And no Doc Hudson blue, looks cool, but I want mine different.
So help me out guys!
Thanks,
Jay

Jay,
I don't have them with me but I've got some pics of a lime green metallic 42 Hudson convertible streetrod that I saw at the NSRA nationals in Louisville a few years back. It looked AWESOME! It's made me consider it but I'm sticking to some advice from my streetroddin' uncle: Red for coupes and converts, Black for sedans and other four doors. Oops, I already blew that one! I painted the 31 Pontiac coupe black. Guess I can use any color I want then.

Jay - I think first you have to decide if you want POP or SUBTLE
Ghost flames are SUBTLE ~ Lime Green is POPNot many colors would work with lime green for a ghost flame and be subtle!
IMHO black is the perfect color for ghost flames done with pearl
I did a custom color for a guy with a 67 Chevelle SS once - it was a dark Cherry red metallic, nearly black but not so much you would confuse it for black - that would be cool color on a Hudson.
Darker colors will make the car seem less bulky - lighter colors will bring out the Hudson Girth a little more.
But darker colors are harder to keep looking clean so, maintenance is something to think about also.
I know what color mine is going to be - I feel sorry for you still trying to decide!0 -
The other thing Dan is darker colors are hotter here! Black is a terrible color in AZ. You can burn your hand leaning on a black car here in the summer. Thats also why smart folks here don't have black seats. My painter guy usually uses the same paint for the flames just gets the color slightly different so you can see the flames only at certain angles.
I thought I saw a gold Hudson stepdown or maybe it was a Merc. My donor was originally a gold color. And lime green doesn't seem that much lighter than gold. But I only threw the lime green out there, I'm not stuck on any color for sure (except the ones I don't want below). I think metal flakes would be too much "pop" for sure, it would just be asking to be stolen! My other issue is my dash. The pacemaker has a herringbone patterned dash which I want to keep (it is almost perfect). The colors look more brown and black to me, so the colors should go with it. But I don't like brown for a sled. And white, red, black and blue are out as well. I may have to dish the dash, but I'd hate to do so.
Paint colors are like designing my backyard, I have no taste for creativity. Guess thats why I crunch numbers for a living!
Rick, that grey is a cool color!

Jay, I have some pictures of Hudsons in custom colors on my computer at work that I will post next time I get into the office. (I'll probably drop by there Sat or Sun). It should be painted so that people have to put their sun glasses on just to look at it!

Hey thanks Terry, cool man!

Black is not always the best color for ghost flames (IMHO) - my daily driver ('00 Trans Am) is white, and I had pearl flames laid out on it. The main flame color is green, but the blue and purple that was added give the flames an iridescent quality that really pop out under direct sun or flourescent lights. I can locate some pics if you like, but the flames are real subtle - almost can't see 'em at 10 feet away.
For my Hudson ('36 Terry truck), I was originally thinking about painting it in GM's Electron Blue that was on the C06 Corvette's. Somewhere I also have pics of a different T/A painted this color with flames outlined in an ice-blue fade - *beautiful* combination. Here's a different example of the Electron Blue, but without the flames: http://www.iroczone.com/Carlisle2005/P6250002.JPG
But now I'm thinking about "updating" the original color of my '36 . . . The paint still left on the firewall reminded me of a royal blue type of color (haven't seen the paint chips for '36, so I don't know what it was called), so I was thinking about doing that in a BC/CC combo with a Topaz or sky blue pearl to give it a bit of sparkle.
If you're more into reds, though - then may I suggest the metallic red that Stacey David designed for his '34 International pickup: The Hairy Hauler
(Where's the Doh! smiley when you need one?) Well, I just noticed your other post, and here I am sugesting colors that are already out of the question, lol. In that case, may I present Stacey's Copperhead: Copperhead. Out of all my suggestions, this would match your dash the best (metallic copper). I'll leave my previous suggestions since they might give other people some different ideas.

I've always tended toward dark colors for the stepdowns, for the same reason I tend to wear dark colors myself- 'nuff said (see Dan's post above). My favorite is PPG's Black Cherry basecoat/clearcoat. I think metallic detracts from a dark, subtle paintjob. Other thing is, ghost flames are probably most impressive on a dark, "almost black but not black" color that "pops" in the sun. But, as you say, very uncomfortable in intemperate Arizona. Some past threads have shown a mega-bucks 4 door stepdown converted to coupe and made to look like a Merc (why didn't he just get a Merc?)- don't have a site, but someone will remember. It was finished in kind of a tangerine/gold, and looked great.0

That copperhead color is interesting. I really like the deep blue colors, but after the Cars movie there are enough blue Stepdowns out there. I'm thinking about that one. And Mike, I agree with you that ghost flames are best looking on the darker colors, my neighbor did a '49 Merc sled and it was beautiful (deep deep purple)! My concern with dark colors of course, is temperature. I want to drive this thing everyday, and I'm not sure duramat or anything else will keep enough heat out during the hot summer days 'cause it will have to be parked outside all the time. And temps in a locked car can reach 135-150 degrees, maybe more! And I don't want it to take forever to cool with the a/c since my kid will be riding in the backseat.
I remember one of my client's wife came to sign a tax return last summer. She parked her minivan near the building (near my window) and ran into our office just to sign their return and then leave. Within 2 minutes, the police were there surrounding the minivan (which she did leave running w/ the a/c on). She was on her way out our door and caught site of the black and whites! She was lucky to get a very harsh warning by the cops (it is actually illegal to do this)! These things are taken very seriously here in the desert. I never leave my child unattended in the car/truck, but I'm just showing damn hot it can get around here inside a car in the summer.
Does anyone have some suggestions on what material works best for thermal insulating? Is dynamat the best?

Jay, I too was thinking of something in a copper/rust type tone. GM is using a color right now which i think would be good. i know i didn't quite get it right, but something like this?0

better than green anyway0

Wow Nick, those aren't bad looking cars! And mine will have much less chrome on it and the color all the way down the rockers, so I think the color would show up even better. I'm trying to imagine it without the visor.

I am online this morning with the TV going in the background and heard it's going to be around 110 down there today - I'd never want to live in that heat but I'll certainly come visit sometime!
Here's another idea - GM code 11 bright white with silver pearl edged flames with blue pearl tips.
It's a good subtle look if done correctly - the pearls actually look good over a white base and white will not absorb the heat and is easier to keep looking clean.
Also other than the pearl flame ends the white is a good color for touch-ups as opposed to the lighter colored metallics being floated around - yet another consideration for a daily driver - ease of matching paint!
White also foots the bill for keeping the car cooler than a darker color.0 -
here are a couple more Hudsons, I hope. I have more, but I have to resize them a bit.0

another one (maybe)0

Jay,
Here's one you may not have thought of!

Only if I could smoke it! But can you imagine the ugs that must be crawling in and out of that thing! Around here it would make a great scorpian or cockroach hotel!0

Terry, now that's another good looking one. If only I had design talent to thing up cool graphics like that one. Maybe if I could come up with a two dimensional outline of a Hudson Coupe, then I could draw in graphics or flames with a pencil and change it how I would like with just an eraser.
Its hell to be a bean-counter!

Hey Jay,
I just thought you might enjoy a little humor today.

Chaz, I can always use a bit humor! Just finished a return today and 2 associated returns, then realized a mistake and all 3 have to be reprinted and reassembled!

If you did a Corvette like that VW, would it be a Chia-vette?0

Jay,
Here is a 51 Coupe here in town. Is it low or what!
He's planning to change from green.

Nothing subtle about that front end, is there? Must be the "Pamela Anderson" option.0

I know I'm in the minority but I say if you want a custom grille - build your own! Don't bolt parts on from other cars and call it "Custom"
If you want a Buick grille - buy a Buick!
If you want a Desoto grille - buy a Desoto!
Or just buy a big ol' cow-catcher from a steam train and bolt it on - you'd get the same effect
And so on and so on...may the flogging begin0 -

I definately love that stance! Thats how low I want to be able to get. I'll use near stock height for cruising on the roads, but I want it low for the parking lot cruise!
Not wild about that green color and the grille set-up is too wild for me, but everyone has their own taste.
But I have a couple months to decide color, boy thats a job! My son still likes the lime green, but I'm still looking for ideas.
Dan, I know how you feel about the grills, but mines getting the '55 Olds insert. lol Figuring out the layout will be a chore, but it'll look good I'm sure.
Thanks everyone, keep them coming!
