separating automatic trans from engine
I've removed all the bolts around the bellhousing, and the trans has moved back about 3/8 of an inch or so, untill its cleared the alignment dowels, but it seems to be "stuck" there now.
I thought it would just be splined in and slip out like some standards, but that dosen't seem to be the case. Maybe there's a retaining collar in there that has to be undone through the pan from underneath ? --- or is it just tight on a spline or something ?
Any advice will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
silverone.

Nope, -- I didn't !!! Sounds like a good place to start !! Makes sense now that I think about it, --- flywheel bolts to crankshaft, and looks like torus comes off with trans, instead of staying with flywheel, and trans slipping out of torus on spline.
Is this correct ?
Thanks for this --- I hate mopping up trans fluid off a concrete floor !!

Well that went slick once I knew what do do ! I just blocked the engine with the help of the engine jack, made a rudimentary tranny cart out of one of my wheel dollies, took out the thirty bolts, and voila, the trans rolled away like it was never attatched.
However, now I see I'm going to need a new torus/flywheel gasket, since the old one was so brittle it just fell apart.
Wonder where I'm gonna find that ?
Anyway, thanks a million Ken, you saved the day big time !
Now for that distributor. Nope I haven't disturbed it yet on the old engine. Should be a snap with your instructions !

Bushings are in great shape Ken, --- looks like a new one in Dave's engine.0 -
Ryan,
while you have that tranny out if that is the one you will be using with the new engine now is the time to install a new front and rear seal on it.0 -

You're probably right, '51. The old ones weren't leaking much, but they're likely getting brittle by now.
Where's the best place to grab them ? Did you get yours locally when you did your automatic ?
Oh yeah, check your private messages box -- sent you one a couple days ago.

Those seals are sneeky buggers they will know you put a new engine in and leak one weak later. I would try Dale Cooper or Dave Kostanek. It is easy to change them now and they are your primary cause of leaks.
Got your pm will check my sources here have not had any done so will need to ask around.0
