Anyone have a Dash insert for 49 Commodore
I have a 49 Hudson Commodore 8. The dash looks good with the exception of the metal piece that was woodgrained, mounts between the two glove boxes ( holes in it for the speedometer, Clock, two idiot lights, fuel gauge, temperature gauge and radio ). My part has woodgraining that has deteriorated. I would like to find a replacement piece that has the woodgrain in good shape, or something that I could strip down and attempt to re-woodgrain.
Hopefully Bill A might have this part, or maybe Al S

You guys are exactly right - that is the part I need. One of the guys on the forum private messaged me that he has one that I can obtain that needs to be redone. Not sure I can do the woodgraining and make it match the rest of my dash ( glove boxes especially ), but will follow the advice on an older thread on this forum and give it a shot. At least I will have a piece to work with, without stripping my current part down only to find my woodgraining efforts did nto yield an acceptable result. My current part looks like your "before" picture, rather than the after picture. The "after" picture sure looks nice! What method did you use to do the woodgraining?

I have a dash insert that has the wood grain in very good condition. I am going to strip it and paint it black. I could consider trading for one that is in good shape. Mine is perfect but I will be sanding to repaint. What condition is yours? The wood color is dark brown. Thanks0

Mine is in good shape ( no dents ), only issue is that the woodgraining came off in spots on the bottom ( below the radio ). You can see the bare metal ( no rust, but no paint either ).
I will take pictures and post them tomorrow ( it's too late tonight ). Take a look and maybe we can exchange. Sounds good to me, but take a look at the pictures 1st

The method I used was remove dash and because of the end value on a low mileage original convertible, it was taken to professional woodgrainer, Bill Grykowski in Titusville, PA.
My wife and I did our 49 coupe and I did our truck without removing dash with no problem. Just follow directions in one of the posted methods. On our 49, for the light part, I used GM material they used on side panels of station wagon. If you want to try it, I can send you a piece to try.0 -
Commodore8,
Here are a couple pf pictures of my dash. You can see the missing woodgraing paint. Hopefully you can see the condition of the dash. Let me know if you are willing to swap. My dash is lighter woodgrain than I thought.
Also, how would you ship a piece like that so it would not get damaged. I was thinking a cardboard box with lots of bubble wrap and packing, but perhaps I should make a small wooden box slightly bigger than the piece, so it can't get bent. Any ideas?

Commodore8,
One more picture of the dash showing a longer view. Is your piece the same color, or is it the dark walnut?

Sorry, trying to figure out how to insert an image. I figured out how to attach a file, and now how to insert a link - how do you insert a picture so you don't have to click on an attachment or a link?

Hi, my dash seems a little darker. It will all be stripped and sanded tomorrow. Thanks0
