Nickel or chrome?

Can anybody tell me whether the steering column and inside window mouldings of my '42 Commodore Eight are originally nickel plated or chrome plated? Looks like nickel to me as it has a 'tint' to it. Chrome is usually 'whiter' in color.

  • Hi Hudson Dave here . They were nickel . I jut had all my stuff done . The only catch Is the cost was the same for Nickel or Chrome and you have to keep up with Nickel or It turns flat. So I had all mine chromed . Hudson Dave www.FatWhiteWalls.com:)
  • Thanks Hudson Dave! I thought that was true and that I had heard it mentioned sometime that is was nickel. I actually like the appearance of new nickel but I know what you mean about having to keep it polished. I'll have to think on this one for a while.

When you have a part nickel plated, make sure the plater isn't just using the nickel that use for undercoating the chrome. This is junk. the shine on a quality bright nickel will last a good year without maintenance. I have nickel plating on my 22 brand x. The plating is 20+ years old. All I do is clean and wax it once a year and it shines all season.

If the plating is inside it should last even longer.

Also, a friend of mine who works for NASA had a NASA contractor nickel plate some pieces for his Hudson. Seems as though the Space Shuttle uses nickel plating in some of the connections as nickel does not go bad in space, This stuff was great. In the 5 years I followed the car the plating was never touched.

So, go to someone who knows about proper nickel plating.
  • Hi---Not 100% sure, but I think the steering column was nickle plated while the window trim was chrome. Incidentally. nickle plating will keep it's shine a lot longer if coated with clear Polyurethane.

KEEP the nickle, be original, go original. LOL People are impressed when you tell em the whole steering colum is nickle plated, even if it is partially because of material shortages during the war. Isn't nickle usually a step in the chrome plating process??? Can anyone enlighten this thread on that ?
