Best Route to Auburn from Mid-Atlantic States?

I will be driving my Terraplane to Auburn from the Washington, D.C. area. I've heard several opinions regarding the best route. I would appreciate any comments, especially if you know something (about road conditions!) that I don't!

My criteria would be fastest time consistent with a top cruising speed of only about 60 mph. So, for example, a nice, leisurely, un-congested stretch of 55-mph highway is probably worth more to me than a 75-mph road (I can't take advantage of the higher speed and don't want to be blown off the highway by 80 mph 18-wheelers!).

Three recommended routes (so far) are:

1.) Route 70 west (on the Pa. Tpke) to Wheeling, 250 northwest to Wooster, O., and 30 west from Wooster to Ft. Wayne / Auburn.

2.) Route 70 west to Columbus, O., and 33 northwest from there to Ft. Wayne / Auburn.

3.) Route 70 west to Richmond, IN and 27 north to Ft. Wayne / Auburn.

Thoughts? Further suggestions?

jon, coming out of S.E. ohio, 70 to columbus and 23 to 30 is the route I plan on taking. I was up that route last fall on buisness trip to northern indiana.
as for your other options, when i was through indiana last month going to and from oklahoma, there was pretty heavy construction between colombus and richmond and was our only hang up so i would suggest avoiding that stretch. I haven't been on 250 lately, but it is definitely a leisurely drive compared to the highways.
regardless anything will seam leasurely for you once you are clear of the pa turnpike. do the terraplane a favor and stay on 70 though wheeling as 470 is up and over a considerable hill.

Jon, I'm inclined to agree with Nick S on your route - when you get to the east side of Columbus, take I-270 north around to US 23. This is all good road, and a good part of it will be four lane, so you can still look forward to some truck traffic, but at least their speeds will be a bit slower.

70 to P'burg - 30 to Fort Wayne. I know 30 across Ohio is good road. May be some construction around Mansfield, but from there on it's 4-lane limited access all the way to Fort Wayne.

The following might help you decide: "Canton, Ohio, to Pittsburg - sparsely wooded farming country between Liverpool and Canton. Liverpool to Pittsburg, more hilly and well forested. Not a fast route, but offers a complete and rather sudden change in scenery.

Canton to Van Wert, Ohio - Level to rolling country between Mansfield and Van Wert. This is fertile farming country. Traffic is moderate and speed, average.

So says the AAA Tour Guide book for 1941. :D

Update. Last time I went over it from Liverpool to Canton was 2-lane, not much traffic. Was two lane thru Mansfield area, but they were working on it (about 5 years ago) in the I-71 area, so it may now be 4-lane thru the Mansfield area. Pick up I-469 north on the east side of Fort Wayne to 69 north to Auburn.

There was truck traffic west of Mansfield - they use it to avoid tolls on the I-80/I-90 route, but it's tolerable. Or was at the time I last went over it.

Keep on truckin' down them old, lonesome highways.

  • Jon. Belive me YOU DONT want to be on rt 70 in an old car. The western side of PA. is the pits. Especially where it goes thru West Va..

Jon, Whatever you do, don't take highway 250 through West Virginia! Unless you like the sound of dualing banjos! We made that mistake returning from the Pittsburg National. Did not want to stop for any reason ! Hope you found your voltage regulator, as I asked Lester Harris today if he had one, and he said he may have one. Lester's phone number is (775) 267-2559. Might have to send it express to get to you in time.

Thanks for the tip, Ray. As to the electrical situation, a skilled Hudsonite seems to have cured my problem, yesterday. (Turns out that my generator wasn't even the correct one for 1937; he put a 1948 regulator on it, and everything seems to work fine!
