Oil and Tappets
As I am learning more each day, help me learn more....our engines have flat tappets against the cam lobes (from the Zinc in Oil threads) and these tappets push the valve stems up at the appropriate time.
Are there bearing tappets available for our engines when we rebuild them? I would think they would have a roller type bearing at the end?
If so, besides some wear related gains, what else do we gain by using tappets with bearings? Horsepower (how much), even more reliability, etc?

I don't think it is worth the trouble.
I think properly adjusted, the conventional tappets will provide good service.
As far as wear, you would have to log a ton of miles to see significant wear, on the cam or tappets. I think you said this is going to be a weekend driver, right? In terms of gains, you might gain some RPM's, but then you got the crank to worry about breaking, there's nothing much there to do, so any gains you get with a different tappet set-up, I bet you loose with limited RPM's.
If you're looking for HP, try adding twin H, headders, a different profile cam, other intake options, electronic ignition, alumuminum head, etc.... I think these are valuable additions.
the regular ones are hard enough to get, let alone something custom. I don't know of bearing tappets available, but I could very well be wrong.

I don't think there is a problem with Hudson tappets, particularly in the Step-down and Jet motors, as these are revolving followers, and are ground at a slight angle to the camshaft to ensure that they turn and wear evenly. The cam followers most prone to wear, both of th cam and follower are those in the splash-oiled engines from '34 onwards, which have direct wiping action. The earlier versions had roller cam followers, and the main problem with these is wear of the pin that the roller revolves on. There is no way that a roller type follower could be used in the later engines.

Thank you. I was just wondering about the tappets with all the discussion going on. My cam looked good and felt good when I had the oil pan off to remove sludge and take a peak inside.
Yes, HK, this is going to be a daily driver type. I am down to wiring so I have all my lights. Then I have to find a nice policeperson to come a verify the VIN for a PA title and plate.0
