1st Annual Hudson Drag Race....rained out

Guys,

Well a few of us got to make some passes at Muncie yesterday afternoon but the rain arrived just after 5:30. Several people who were going to drive down

were smart to stay in Auburn becasue of the impending rain. The rest of us

got wet!

John P. made three passes in his big block Chevy powered 41 Hudson coupe.

He was down into the mid 13's but was experiencing some traction problems.

Beautiful vehicle and it was exciting to see John flogging it.

Vincent from Kansas showed up with his wild 308 Hornet (well its way-way

bigger than 308cid) powered Jet coupe. Vincent made one pass but I was

his victum as he ran a 14.31 at almost 93mph. He was in the staging lanes

ready to race Randy Maas in his 41 Hudson when the rain hit.

I made one pass aginst Vincent's Jet. I ran my quickest time yet at 17.68 at

76mph. Mine felt really good on this run and pulled strong to 4000 rpm in

each gear without any mis-firing issues.

Randy Maas and his group made the trip down but has a flat tire on the

motor home. This put them about 30 minutes behind the rest of us. He

unfortunatly arrived right before it started to rain and did not get a chance

to make a pass.

There were about 10-15 other Hudson fanatics in attendence for fan support.

Since this was rained out we have the chance to go back tonight ( I can't do

this tonight as I have a funeral to attend) or come back Saturday night for

more racing.

Several of us will be going Saturday night for some fun and hopefully dry

racing action. The Saturday night racing at Muncie starts at 7:30pm.

They open up the gates at 2:00 with pratice starting soon there after.

Anybody who would like to come down is more than welcome.

If the rain did not come we would have had several more show up. Dany

Spring was going to race Kaylene's 41 Hudson Broughm. Six other Hudson

guys were going to come down to race (sorry but I'm not real good with names) and quite a few more to watch.

Looks like we all need to pick a track within reason for us to meet at next

spring. Maybe something in the Kansas or Missouri area would be a good

starting point for discussion.

My last commit is that while we do badly need the rain it could have held off

for one more day.

PaceRacer, If you are still at the Nats. could you find the 308 SUPERCHARGED Hudson and take a picture of the installation for Mark Hudson and myself? A friend of mine was there a short while the other day and said that he saw a Hudson with one but could not find the owner. He thinks that it was a stepdown ?

Maby you have seen it. Thanks so much Rudy

    Yes! Please.

I would really like to know the name of the owner also.

    Thanks.

  • Guys,

there was a engine on a trailer with a supercharger on it but by the time I

parked the truck and went to look I couldn't find it. It looked like a set up

similar to the Gibbson-Binks boat pictures from a while back but the engine

    was red instead of yellow.

I asked around but drew a blank.

    Sorry but no pictures... yet.

On another note the daughter and I left Auburn yesterday around 6:30 and

stayed south off of 69 so we could go to Muncie today and do some more

Drag racing. The attempt was a total failure as I discovered this morning

at 9:45 that both front motor mounts on the PaceMaker had failed.

Apparently I have ripped the rubber from the mounting bases completly off.

The engine has shifted about 3/4" to the driver's side. It did feal funny

wednesday night when I powered out of the burnout box at Muncie and

    now I know why.

Does anybody have any suggestions for making solid front motor mounts?

Looks like I got some extra work to do this week.

I towed the PaceMaker about 800+ miles for one (YES 1) pass at the drag strip. I'm tired, pissed and not ready to do more engineering this weekend.

    see you all later,

    PaceRacer50
  • if you go solid engine mounts, make sure you use solids for the trans as well.

my pacemaker came with one of the mounts modified at the front with the original studs taken out and replaced with a bolt through the entire lot with a big washer under the pad too. i think i will just revise whats been done here to a higher standard (plain nuts were very loose)

the AMC six cylinder mounts work with hudson plates and pads but the two threads are hooked into each other to prevent this tearing out. a search of the forum will show you the part number for them. this will save all that extra work you are keen to avoid. good luck!
  • I vote the AMC mounts. They aren't as pretty as the Hudson, but will not come unhooked if the rubber fails.

Funny motormount story. When I rebuilt the brakes on the Wasp, in a firm stop - I could hear the fan just barely grazing the radiator. I had a full 1" clearance from the fan to the radiator at the time. Come to find out, the combination of an overly soft trans mount and two front mounts that looked good but weren't - were letting the engine ease forward and just barely shine up the solder joint of the radiator top tank with the fan.

    I went AMC

You could use the pre-48 engine mounts like the NASCAR guys did back in the early 50's. Just make sure to use grade 8 bolts with the rubber mounts.

    Jerry

    53jetman
  • Well guys I spent most of today making new solid front mounts for the 50

    Pacemaker.

I used 2.5" wide x 3/8" thick steel plate and cut them to the same length

of the stock lower plates. The two outer 3/8" mounting holes were drilled

using the stock lower plates as a template. I drilled 1/2" diameter holes in

the center of the 3/8" holes.

After measuring the total height of the stock mount I needed 1" spacers

between the 3/8" plate and the bottom of the stock front engine plate. I

used ten .100" thick 1.375" diameter washers for the spacers to get the

    exact height needed.

The 1/2" bolts I used are 2-1/2" long which were mounted from the bottom

using steel nylon insert lock nuts and split lock washers for some extra

insurance. I just don't want these to come loose at all.

This stiffened up the mounting 100% but suprisingly the car does not seam

to be vibrating much at all. Its pretty smooth and does give the car a little

cam inspired rocking it idle in gear.

Note: since I am running the GM 350 turbo hydromatic transmission with the

aluminum case I did not use a solid transmission mount. I learned about 20

years ago not to use those with the aluminum transmission cases as you will

tear the case or rip the mounting pad clean off! I did this to two 350 turbos

in GTO's in the early 80's before someone advised me not to use the solid

    transmission mounts.

What I do on the transmission mount is to wrap two large diameter radiator

hose clamps around the center and tighten them down to compress the

rubber of the mount. The hose clamps are just strong enough to prevent

total failure of the rubber. It appears to me you need a little flex at the

tranny mount or bad things happen to the tailshaft housing.

I did go for a test drive and now can feel a big difference in throttle response.

Before I could not hold the break peddle down and floor the throttle to do a

burnout except in the water box at the drag strip. Now it will light both rear

    tires up when provoked!

I wonder what's next to go in the box of broken parts?

    PaceRacer50
  • My broken parts box enlargeth itself daily.

You'll eventually be turning 13-ish times, once you get the demons worked out.

I'll be looking for you on Pinks-All Out.

It was a Terraplane coupe with a supercharger and nitrous. The car belongs to a man near Erie, Pennsylvania.
  • Supercharger and Nitrous, unbelievable!

I've seen a few pictures, and it is plumbed for Nitrous and looks as if its been used a while.

That is an engine I'd like to know more about.

    Mark
  • Actually there was a trailer with what looked like a Hornet 308 with a

setup like the Gibbson-Binks supercharger. It looked to have the 2x2bbl

intake and the two tubes going over the top of the head to a blower

on the left side of the engine. It was parked in the Hotel parking lot that

was between the Auburn Inn & the Applebees.

I was with my daughter and we got side tracked so we never made it back

    there to check it out.

Did anybody see this one? It was there friday afternoon but it was not there

    friday morning.

I've been wondering about running NOS on mine but using a 50 or 75 horse

shot. My thinking with the clifford head, 1/2" ARP studs and 1" Stock car lug

nuts sealing should not be a problem. I am more worried about the crank

    coming out the bottom!

I did see this Terraplane but never with the hood up while I was there on

wednesday, thursday or friday. Guess I should have stayed a little longer

friday to see it open up.

    later,

    PaceRacer50
  • I don't know a great deal about nitrous.

    But I'm a fast learner.

You should try it Ralph. I really don't think your bottom end is in danger until the rpm/redline area. Doesn't matter how fast you get to the redline, just don't go over it.

Mark, the owner is Chuck Vorse 814-476 7393 Mc Kean Pa.

He is the owner of the SUPERCHARGED Terra. that was at the Nats.

A friend of mine talked to him at the meet about the 308 eng.

He is a loooong time drag and dirt hudson racer.

    Pal Rudy.

There ya go Ralph, a nitrous experianced Hudsonite.

You may be spraying a 150 shot before you get finished.

    Thanks Rudy.

The supercharged Terra appears to have a stock aluminum head on it. I'm wondering about that :>) I heard it run and saw it drive and it sounded great! The supercharged engine in the pickup appears to be from Uncommon Engineering. I checked that out too. The COOLEST thing there was the Hudson-powered dirt track (jalopy type) car. It has a 33(?) Ford body, what's left of it and is on a 54(?) Chevy frame with all Ford running gear but a Hornet engine. The guy who built and races it is 83. I had a lot of fun drinking with him at Applebee's. I have some pix of it I can try to post.
