Steering rebuild for 1948
Trying to fix this loose steering issue.
We disassembled the front end (havn't pulled the kings yet, but all linkage is apart). Tie rod ends look good.
One reason the steering was loose was probably due to the fact that the "yoke" or pivot point for the arm that ties the control rods to the steering box was loose. I think that could have killed me if it had actually come off.
I'm getting new kingpin sets (with bushings) from Canters. Can get the needle bearing. But I noticed rust on the pivot arm's shaft (and some pitting) to match the rust on the old bearings.
I need to get new seals for the pivot arm, and figure out a way to keep water away from it so the new bearings won't rust.
Ideas? Anything else I should look at?
Thanks;
-Chris
