Wiring Diagram
We're trying to find a wiring schematic for a 51 Commodore 6. We just brought this car home and although there is power to the coil, there is no spark to the plugs. I re-gapped the points but am still not getting spark from them. Replaced the coil today but that didn't help. Negative side is going to the points. So I'm looking for a schematic so I know where to go from here.

Jim,
I got a schematic - drop me an email at NEChudsontech09@yahoo.com (drop the NEC) and I'll scan it and email it back.

Try 2 things. 1. replace the condenser if the problem still exists check the distributer wire between the upper and lower plates. It might be broken or insullation worn causing a ground. I would guess that the dist is at fault some where.I presume the engine cranks, so check the roter to see if it tuns as well0

not to be dumb, but the rotor isn't sitting outside the distributor, is it? I did this once, and I thought I was gonna go mad, until I figured out how dumb I was!0

You can download a scan of the wiring diagram from the following URL. When you print the jpg... use center on the page, enlarge to paper size and the darkest setting you can make the printer print.

Or use the tools on this BBS and select Print the thread... it should print the schematic.0 -
best bet is in the distributer-- check for corrosion on the contacts inside the cap { clean the inside of the cap} or in the places where wires plug in , corrosion on the roter and do the condensor swap and check the little wire attached to the points for a bare spot in the insulation0

I'm surprised to hear your coil 'negative' is going to the points. Check your polarity, I think it should be positive earth . Your coil earths through the points and when they break the circuit, you get the high voltage out of the coil to the rotar.
No spark usually means the points are either not completing the circuit when closed or maintaining the circuit even when open by way of a short to earth.
Check polarity, install new points !0 -
your polarity is already determined by the battery/ generator, the hot wire goes to pos on coil and neg to dist, thats so the coil windings can build up more volt. to check hold a lead pencil between wire to dist and the coil, if the spark is between wire and dist it is wrong ,spark should be between pencil and wire0
-
said it WRONG, check for spark between wire to dist and COIL, if between lead pencil and COIL it is wrong, should be between pencil and wire to DIST0

And none of us "experts " has even mentioned setting the point gap !!!0

That is because he had already done that .:)0 -
