How to wire the NAPA OD kickdown

okay, trying to wire up the OD (hudsondad came up with an OD relay) I got the NAPA OD 6284 kickdown, just trying to figure out what goes where. I have to imagine that someone wired one already, just need to know which position to wire the... solenoid, relay, shift rail, and coil to.

If you look at the kickdown, think the top spot, at 12 O'clock, second spot at 3 O'clock, third spot at 5 O'clock, and final spot at 6 O'clock.

I don't know why the terminals are not marked, nor why there was no wiring diagram with it....

Oh well!

any help would be appreciated!

We wired a toggle switch on ours, and works great! You can call Ken Perkins at (818) 378-1992, as he is an expert on wiring this up. (He did mine years ago) He can give you all the technical details.
  • yeah, I'm trying to keep it stock as I can, until i find something that does not work. and then I have to modify it. Right now, my holding point was the OD kickdown, which is available, but cannot find the original with the odd pin connector, so I got to wire it up with what I got.

You can use a headlight socket for the plug!

H'kid, here's how it goes: The two terminals closest to the floorboard (i.e., toward the top of the switch) are the ones that are wired into the control circuit for the relay. So the terminal on the relay that provides the ground path is connected to either of these "top" terminals (doesn't matter which one), and the other top kickdown terminal is connected to one side of the reverse lockout switch. (From the other lockout switch terminal is the wire to the governor). The two lowermost terminals on the kickdown are for the "ignition shorting" circuit. The wire from the solenoid #6 terminal goes to one of these lower kickdown terminals, and from the other one goes the wire to the "distributor side" of the coil.
  • Park, you are a lifesaver!

I assume you mean the A terminals, one goes to the lockout, one to the relay,

and on the B series, one goes to the coil, and the other goes to #6.

It is marked A and B, at least. That sounds good!

Dave, no, I got plenty of connectors, just don't know what happened to all of the overdrive stuff I took off the car. You think I would have kept better track of it for the last 15 years.... I actually got a filthy harness from hudsondad, with a voltage regulator attached, all of the connectors, frayed wiring, etc... so it provided a better pattern for me than my supermatic drive harness.

H-Kid, I didn't recall how the terminals were marked (A,B, etc.) so described them by location. Hope that puts you back in business.
  • they are marked as the location the upper two are "A" and the lower two are "B" so it seems it all works!

    How about this....

On the govenor, I don't have much of anything that gets wired to it, do I? My car was originally supermatic drive, and I think most of the wires on the old harness were for that, specific, am I right? I think that it appears that only the pin connector is used?

the one harness doesn't appear to have a connector, but my supermatic looks like 5 wires, plus the pin.

My Drivemaster service manual shows that one terminal with the socket for a "bullet" connector is the one for the overdrive (it may be labeled "R"). So the wiring goes from there to the reverse lockout switch, then from the other terminal on the lockout switch to one of the 'A' terminals on the kickdown, etc.
