got stuck in the essex today
luckily i was at my brothers house, i went to take him for a ride, got down the block and had a hesitation, i realized i forgot to turn the fuel on. i got out turned it on, took off and it just wouldnt stay running unless i choked it. my guess is there was some crap in the bowl of the carb and it sucked it up. i took the cover off and i could see tiny brass particles moving around in the fuel, i guess from the on off valve. sucks, the car has been running pretty good lately, i had to leave it at his house and ill go back to get it tomorrow with my trailer. any advice? im thinking ill have to pull the carb apart and blast it out with carb cleaner.

My guess is that Geoff Clark will jump in with a great suggestion, but....is it possible to put a fuel filter somewhere in the line, to catch that sort of thing. Where is the valve you speak of -- at the outlet of the vacuum tank?0

I am running a stock vacuum tank on my 29 Hudson with the original Marvel carb. I do have 2 glass inline filters that some say don't bother but it works for me. I had my tank cleaned and sealed and cleaned my fuel line and had Geoff Clark check my carb. and vacuum tank that I got at a swap meet. I have one filter just before the vacuum tank and the other just before the carb. and I can see the tank pulling the fuel and the carb. getting the fuel and there is crap in both filters. Just my 2 cents, Ron0 -
My car has the sediment bowl under the vacumne tank with a mesh filter and also a modern in line filter under the car by the electric fuel pump. Whops now everyone knows!0

Sounds like an overkill - I have run my Essex for over 50 years with NO fuel filter except for the sediment tank in the bottom of the vacuum tank. Sounds to me like a the main jet blocked - easy enough to remove and blow out, but you have to take the float bowl off by removing the screws holding it to the throttle body. the jets unscrew from the pedestals, and you will have to clear them out, check both low and high speed. jets.

im definitely putting a filter on it, i cant say it would have saved me as if it is brass, its from the on off valve on the bottom of the vaccum tank. but maybe ill do some kind of filter after the vavle somehow. see what i come up with, ill let you know how iu make out, im going to pick the car up now.0

I could send you a picture of my filters if you like. Ron sultans@webtv.net0 -
fixed it. 3 cans of carb cleaner and blowing it out with air. turns out the previous owner spray painted the carb inside and out. the paint lifted and most likely made its way through the passeges. one question, ther eis abrass washer holding down a emall restrictor i nthe bottom of the fuel bowl, is something suposed to hold it down? it was not a very tight fit and im wondering how it is supposed ot stay in place?0

It should actually be a brass disc, not a washer, and is held down when the winter/summer control is set on "winter, so that a back pressure develops in the accelerator pump circuit.

this carb does not have the winter summer selector, i have another one that has it but this one doesnt even have the words winter summer. i guess you could call it a brass disk. a round piece of brass with a hole in the center, looks very close in size to a 5/16" washer. under that there is a smaller piece with a small hole in it and 3 legs to support it and locate it.0

Geoff.
This site gives a picture of what Geoff is talking about.

This raises the question of what model Marvel carb do you have?0 -
yeah i have another carb that has that, everything else looks exatly the same this one just doesnt have that.0
-
Mmm. Is possible you have some mixing and matching of parts here? That is a climate control float bowl with non-climate control top. The pictures I have seen of Marvel carburetors that don't have climate control don't a brass disc.0
-
i guess its possible. i took a better look and the carbs are different. the one on the car doesnt have the little strainer at the inlet. also it doesnt have the screw on the bottom of the accelerator pump. maybe ill take a pic of the 2 of them. it works. seems to work pretty good too.0
