im really tring to keep it stock...
the car is just putting up a fight. i got a nice big canister fuel filter mounted up in front of the tank, repaired my broken, non working, cut off temp guage, and went for a nice long ride. my exhaust manifold acquired a new crack and started leaking. almost home i heard a loud boom and knocking, i thought for sure i threw a rod, pull over and it was running fine. so i got off the highway. im not sure what was the cause of it but the end result, the bearing in the fan is bad, the pulley is all bent up, one fan blade broke off and busted the radiator and went through the side of the hood. anyone happen to have a spare fan bearing pulley setup lying around for my 31 essex?

Yikes! It's as though every pending problem over the past thirty years has suddenly come to a head! I know this is scant comfort, but what's happened to you has happened to everyone(including myself) who has roused an old car from its decades-long slumber: everything goes wrong at once! That stuff was just waiting to happen.
If it's of any value to you, once you get these initial problems (and there seem to be many of them!) ironed out, things will in fact smooth out. Not that you won't have further problems down the line, but once you get the preliminary problems patched up you can begin to anticipate future disasters and prepare accordingly. And there will come a time (though I'm sure you don't believe it!) when the old heap actually becomes predicatable and more or less reliable. For example, I hopped into my 70-year-old Terraplane a couple weeks ago and drove on a 1500-mile round trip, with absolutely no mechanical problems (well, the canvas top ripped open, but that's another story...).
All I can offer now is, "take heart -- things can't keep breaking indefinitely!", LOL!
By the way, have you managed to touch base with any fellow '31 owners yet? This forum is great, but there is no substitute for having two or three friends (even in other states) that you can phone up from time to time with your problems. They may have had the same problem, might have a good tip or interchange idea, and could actually have a spare part or two to lend, sell or give you.0 -
I have been thru the same with my 1929 Hudson standard sedan. Mine sat for 11 years when I got it and did not no squat about Hudsons or old cars but I knew I liked them. It was about 1987 or 88 when I found my Hudson and a 1936 Ford 4 door hump back. I got them and towed them home and the fun started. LOL. Mind you this was before Hudson forums and ebay. Long story short I got both cars running and driving but now the Ford is in pieces and I am sorry I did (kept over heating) and I swore I would never do the Hudson that way. After about 3 years of Hudson driving I was working on the vacuum tank and broke the pot metal top and felt like you and pushed it in the corner and it sat for another 10 or so years. While walking around at a swap meet I spotted what looked like orginal 1929 Hudson Vacuum tank and payed the guy $25.00 for it. (The tank I broke was not an original). Well here I am now with the help from people like Geoff Clark and Perry Spring and many others I now drive my 29 again. It is sure "NOT" a looker but she runs pretty darn sweet. Keep her stock and if need be take a little break from her (Not 10 years LOL) and it will get better. Good luck, Ron0

yeah i have talked with a few other 31 owners. i got the car back together today with some spare parts that i have acquired since the purchase of the car. the radiator isnt the greates as it had a few cracks in the top tank, i soldered them up and hopefully it will hold up till i can do something with the original. maybe have it recored? the part that really got me mad is the radiator. it was really nice. didnt have one mark on the fins. made it this long. i got a better look at the exhaust manifold, there is avery small crack, and the rear most bolt was loose and when i went to tighten it, it just would not grab, i guess the threads pulled out. im not even sure if there is enough room in the car to drill it and helicoil, but im going to take that apart after work tomorow. maybe i will just put a nut on the bottom since you can get to the bottom. the hood didnt even bother me that much. the car looks good from about 10' away and thats good enough for me for a driver. i have been driving it alot lately. its a lot of fun. i really dont want to park it till winter. as i have 2 other cars sitting waiting to be worked on. one i want to sell ,the other is very close to finished bu ti needed a brake from it.0

One of our club members is getting exhaust manifolds re-manufactured for '30 -'31 Essex. Not cheap, but what is the alternative? I can give you his details if you want to consider this option.
