Question- What color(s) were the dashes of a 51 Hornet painted?

Mine happens to be a blue / green marble pattern which is the same color of the original steering wheel. Is a correct color? thanks!

    Niels,

Genera Info. The pattern is referred to as leather grain and is produced using a base color with a second coat suoerimposed and worked to achieve the effect. For the brown colors, the undercoat is an orange. The top coat dark. Seems many people use printer's ink for the latter, then clear coat after several weeks of drying. Several people in the Club do this finish, though it is not inexpensive to have it done.. There is also a roller kit sold by an outfit called "Grain It" in Florida (thought I had it bookmarked). It has been on the forum, and so should be retrievable. Am sure several folks have done the blue. Base there appears to be a light blue-gray on the ones I've seen.

  • The Hornet for 51 came in two interior choices: brown mottled/marbled and blue marbled/ mottled. The steering wheel and accuating plastic knobs etc were either blue marbled, beige or maroon. The cars that were Supers or Pacemakers used beige plastic colored trim. However, if you wanted to upgrade the dealer would install it for you. Green came about in 52 as well as a lighter non marbled blue. Generally the interiors that were brown used the maroon plastic accent color or the beige accent color. Blue marbled dashes used the blue marbled accent plastic. But as with everything Hudson , there were always exceptions.

Good luck figuring out original colors and what Hudson happened to do that day. It's looking like my car's exterior is Nash Corral Red from 1955 as it does not match anything from 1954. Hudzilla guessed it had to be a Nash color being such a late 54. I am still not sure that is right but it is the best the paint shop and I can come up with.

    Bill,

The dash paint looked to me as original with the laquer crazing and no old paint underneath so if it was repainted then it was stripped down to the bare metal. The speaker grill and the defroster vent strip are sunfaded and I want to get them redone. It is a beautiful blue / green marbled dash. Dash, the doors and back of seat still look excellent.
