50 Brougham RUNS! Plus Questions.
Howdy all:
Well, for the first time in at least 25 years that I know of, my 50 Super 6 Brougham started up and ran tonight!! Had a distributor issue that took two days to sort out, and caused me no end of aggravation, but it's all good now. Before I can get her roadworthy, I have a bunch of work ahead of me, which is where you fine folks come in. I've a bunch of questions that need answered.
1) Water pump. Some fool evidently pressed the pulley flange too far on the shaft, then another fool used washers between the pulley and flange to attempt to space the pulley out. Doesn't work worth sour apples. However, I note that the fan is already mighty close to the radiator. So, the question is this: What is the dimension between the forward face of the fan and the aft/rear surface of the radiator? Secondly, where can I get another water pump that hopefully has the dimension right?
2) Does a 50 Super 6 use the carb heat shield?
3) I'm lacking the heat riser choke tube. Anybody got a decent one, or do I make it out of brake line?
4) What size should the fuel line from the tank to the pump be? Right now it's running off a bottle. And yes, the tank has been boiled out and 18 pinholes fixed.
5) Is the drivers side window flat glass? Looks kinda like it has a slight angle to it, but that could be my eyes tricking me.
6) What kind of spring is on the secondary hood latch? Anyone got one?
7) I attach a pic of the set of hubcaps I have...what the heck are these for, anyway? Maybe T-bird? Anyone got a decent set of 50 hubcaps?
8) Second pic attached is the rear view of the illuminated hood ornament. What is attached to the stubs on either side?
MANY THANKS for any answers y'all....
MAN I am stoked..... She sounded great too, once all the oil additive I poured down the plug holes burned out.

Jase, looks like someone has installed a new harness??,this is a plus if so.
1]-First,do you have a mechanical procedures manual and are you a member of the Hudson club?.If you do not have a manual, and are a member, order the manual right away. This manual will have all kinds of good info and we answer alot of questions for you.You can get a remanufactured water pump from Dave Kostansek,Ken Amman, and Dale Cooper. All are in the HET club.
2]-use on the heat sheild
3]-you can make the choke tube from 1/4 copper tube, availible at the local hardware store.Use a ferrel and brass nut along with this. You can also obtain the covering from the auto parts store.
4]-fuel line from the tank is 5/16th's.Make sure that all fittings are double flared.Be careful if you use teflon tape to seal connections. This tape will find it's way to the needle and seat in the carb.and make the float stick[not shut off]
5]-all side glass on this car[vent wings, and side glass] are all flat. You should consider doing all the window felts and division bar when replacing the glass. The felt and division bar weatherstrip is usually gone and causes the glass to break when the doors are closed.
6]-Look at the auto parts store for a suitable spring for the latch. If someone has a picture of one on their car, maybe they will provide a pic and you can match it from there.
7]-I don't know what the caps are you have, but supers have a small cap as standard equipment, and the larger cap with trim rings are availible as optional equipment. These are availible from many people.
8]-The pieces on the center medallion,on either side are supposed to have a sort of half moon washer with a hole in the middle that bolts into the medallion itself.
Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of Hudsoning.0 -
Hi, I believe those wheelcovers are 54 DeSoto. The center ornament uses cup washers on either side under the screws to hold them in. Look in the trunk if your car has the 'pork chops' at the rear end of the side trim, some of the cars used these cup washers on them also.0

I believe the heat riser kits are still available from auto parts stores. They have the choke stove (it is clamped to the exhaust pipe) and the tube itself.
The hubcaps are definitely DeSoto.
If you're in Northern Virginia and need Hudson parts you might want to try Joel Horne in Waterford or Paul O'Malley in Capon Bridge WV (just west of Winchester). Their contact info is in the H-E-T roster. They very well might have some '50 hubcaps lying around.0 -

Again, the medallion has a half moon shaped special part on either side of it.If you use the cup washer which you are describing it will usually bottom out before it tightens the 2 pieces together.Look in your parts book for the picture.:)0 -
Thanks for the info, guys. Yes Doug, I am a HET member and have the books. Found the spec for the fan-to-rad distance, it's 7/8". I've done a bunch of work to the car since it was given to me 2 years ago by a neighbour. Have to give a shout-out to PennDutch Restorations in Glen Rock PA who did the perimeter frame repairs. They have a metalwork genius up there. Also new wiring harness, entire brake system renewed (well, the pedal is still original but that's about it). Fuel tank and radiator renewed, front end rebuilt etc etc.
Work still to do is to free up the clutch (actually I think I am just gonna replace the whole thing so I am starting with known components), new water pump, lots of little stuff left. Then I get to have the interior redone.
Did I mention just how STOKED and happy I am that she runs, and I don't have stuck valves? Yee-haw.:)
