My friend has just bought a 1936 Terraplane coupe, the hood ornament is missing (Everything is missing base and plastic cigar). Does anyone know where I can purchase one?

Don't know where to find a complete ornament, but K-Gap sells the red plastic part in case you find the metal pieces. http://www.k-gapstore.com/servlet/Categories?category=Ornament%5C%3A+Hood%2C+Grille+Trunk

Check Ebay, I have seen these (in used condition) there before.

Tell you friend to join the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club, if he hasn't already done so. An invaluable clearinghouse for this sort of thing (if it can be found at all).

I have just acquired a box of misc Terraplane bits. There is a hood ornament amongst the bits but not sure of the year. It is the "insert" without the bracket. It is orangey red torpedo / cigar shaped with a couple of ring indents around it that I assume is for the bracket?

Would this be the one? Maybe if someone could post a photo of the correct one would be helpful.

This is from a 1936 Hudson. The Terraplane (I think) has a single wing at the top, instead of wings at both sides. Otherwise it is identical.

Sorry, I did not read your original post as clear as I should have - yes I only have the cigar. I hope you can get a complete emblem.

I have had a couple of PMs from this post re the cigar only.

    Good luck

Here is what the 36 Terraplane hood ornament looks like. There is a bottom piece with 2 half-rings, and the top piece with the single wing with the other half of the rings. There are 2 screws from the bottom piece thru the cigar into the top piece. The whole thing fastens to the 'crowfoot' chrome with an Allen screw, which is hidden by a small plug screw.

I have a solid albeit pitted bottom piece I'd part with if you needed it. I used it for a couple of years on this car with a cigar I whittled from a dowel and painted and I carved the top piece from pine until I replaced it with this one that Bill Albright had in his stash. Thanks Bill. This cigar is from K-Gap.

Ornament in good shape is worth $50 to $75, New cigar from Kgap is $50, and the rest of it should bring a couple of hundred.
  • I see items listed with crazy prices a lot for my Zephyr. Sure it's rare, but it's not made of gold! I wonder how often moderately rare parts such as for Terraplanes, Zephyrs, Airflows, and the other art deco greats bring those absurd prices? Is this a product of the circus auction companies making people believe that "rare=desireable=$$$$$$" ?
