308 engine !!
I just got a 53 Hornet club coupe that has a twin H 308 and hydro, Im wondering what that combo weighs . my Wasp didnt have any engine so I didnt realize how big a 308 is !! The head is off and it looks like it has valve reliefs . I heard about the 7X engines having valve reliefs and am wondering about this engine having them or do all of them have the valve reliefs ?? the engine isnt the original - checked the serial number. Its a 308 though . I really am grateful for all the information site members have given me . Thanks !!!

According to Hudson General Technical Policies and Informatin Bulletin No. DL.53-7, issued Feb. 2, 1953, the Hornet Club Coupe, Model 7C, had a shipping weight of 3530 and a curb weight of 3704.
Shipping weight included spare wheel, tire, tube, tools and jack - no gas, oil or water:
Curb weight included gas, oil and water.
If you would like a copy of this bulletin - it gives weighs for Optional Equipment - drop me an email @ NEChudsontech09@yahoo.com (drop the NEC) and I'll be happy to email you a copy of this bulletin.

I think you were asking about weight for combo of engine and tranny. Maybe someone has exact figures, but I think the main message is "Don't worry about it." The 232, 262 and Hornet engines weighed pretty close to the same, and the Hydramatic is far enough to the rear to not put a lot of extra weight on the front suspension. If you find the front sits too low, put in a pair of new Hornet springs.
The engine is likely a '54-'56, unless someone has done the valve relief on an earlier engine. What's the number on the engine?0 -
I saw an ad from Whitney once that stated 667 lbs shipping weight for a complete 308 engine. This included a 2bbl carb instead of a Twin H, but did include starter, generator, waterpump.

Ok, we've got a 667 pound weight for the engine. The tech bulletin, DL.53-7 lists a weight of 148 pounds for a hydramatic transmission. So we looking at a total of 815 pounds here.

total casr weight is 3650, BILL ALBRIGHT0

the shipping weight will include the pallet/packing and strapping---that may be 50-100 lbs more than the motor---bob0
-
so then you add your ancillaries to that weight minus the packing etc and you would be pretty close to getting back to that 665 lb. the figure 700 is what i have come to understand. i'd agree with that 100% just going by the way the crane behaved when i slung my motor out.0

I'll venture to say that an early hydramatic weighs more than 148 pounds...0

i think i agree with hudsonkid 148 sounds a little lean!0

I'm sorry that I don't have the time to look up serial number info for you, but this is the second time recently that a reference has been made to a car's serial number not matching the engine serial number. If I recall correctly, the two serial numbers were only the same on the early stepdowns. At some point (if I had to guess, I'd say beginnig with the '51s) the engine number and the car number were no longer the same. I'll bet someone reading this address this with a greater degree of accuracy.0 -

All I can do is quote what the bulletin, issued by the Hudson Motor Car Company says. Anybody want's a copy of said bulletin, drop me an email @ NEChudsontech09@yahoo.com (Drop the NEC).
Ask for "General Tech. Policies Bulletin DL.53-7", please. I've got a drawer full of "bulletins". Thank you.

I don't believe this is correct. I'll bet the serial # and Vin # match on most original stepdowns at least thru 1954.0 -
If the engine number does not match the vin numbers on the door post, the engine has been chenged. All Hudsons from at least 1937 up left the factory with the engine number the same as the vin number.

I think 148 lbs is just for the transmission minus the bell housing and fluid coupling, that would sound about right. With everything bolted together I'd say 225 to 250 lbs.0

I appologize for my error, guys. I was wrong about the serial number issue. I hate mis-information, especially when it's comes from me!0

It takes a bigger man to admit when he's wrong. Good thing we don't take things as seriously as the Chinese toy manufacturer who commited suicide in shame.0 -
