September Hemmings...Wow!
Hemmings Motor News (the old classified mag) has a story on their first ever rally. Hudson and Essex cars dominated, and the photos are small but great. Essex especially has done well in Great Race events and this type of rally. They were great cars then, and they're great cars now...
Clem Lange's car, which competed in this event, was on display at the National in Auburn...very cool indeed.

This car is very cool indeed!!! Clem took me for a ride in the '19.Have you ever been doing a smooth 75 in a 19 Essex,I have!! I asked how heavily the engine had been modified and he said it was very much aat all.Clem and Bruce booth agreed that the 4 cylinder Essex was very durable and dependible.I guess things you can modify are safety items. It had juice brakes,I believe Clem told me Coker racing wheels, tubes and flaps, special Michelin hard compound tires, knock offs. The engine was balanced to perfection, but still had it's stock oil pump system. It did have a new water pump system that is allowed for safety, but still had it's stock transmission gear box,no syncro-grind-o-matic,that Clem was very slick in shifting.Clems had the shift down to a science, requires no syncro if you know how to shift properly. This one also has a straight pipe that is really cool under all underpasses--makes everybody look-Immediately!!!blah--bobobb-load!!!.Since some days there might be a part of the course on the highway,so classes are allowed to run o/dr..I had a blast riding in this thing.:D Thanks again CLEM!!!!!0 -
Andrew Fulton went cross a continent in his 1919 Essex touring from China to Paris, 10000 miles this last June. Unmodified engine except for an Alt., used stock cooling and oil systems, Wood wheels, nothing fancy other than new tires. Only modifications were a under engine skid plate, shocks, Alt. and extra spare tires and gasoline and 4.11 rear gears. Nothing fancy. Then he drove it home to England. As I remember he had to average somewheres around 50mph for the 10k miles0

A article is being worked on now, Hopefully as soon as he gets reorganized. Anyone who ever has been around these early Essex's will tell you how great they were. They run like blue blazes.0
