fellow classic car enthusiasts. I am stuck, stopped and totally shut down on trying to find a old car that used to belong to a close friend.

All I have is the make the car and the license plate number. The car is in England but the DVLA will not help (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency), although I understand they have their rules, Owners club don't have it registered and every classic car club i have written to do not show it on their records at all.

Please could you advice me on bright ideas to find a specific car?

Best, William

You might approach a fellow owner (in the owner's club) and ask him how HE might get around the DVLA's rules. There must be someone who knows someone, etc.... Maybe someone in the club has a connection to Scotland Yard or a local constabulary, which could make an 'official' inquiry on your behalf.

Otherwise, I would find a website dedicated to that particular marque (such as this forum) and make your plea, offering as much information and photos as you can, in order to identify the car. Surely someone has seen this car at a car show, or advertised in a local newspaper, or driving on the street, or rusting away in a field with some other parts cars.

Fortunately, as you may know, license plates in England follow their cars throughout the car's lifetime. So if you know the car's tag number as of 1970, it will still be the same number in 2007. As to year, if you don't know that you ought to be able to ascertain the rough year by looking through various photos on the internet.

Assuming the car's licensed in the UK, as Jon said, the plate number should still be the same. Perhaps you can find someone who has a police officer friend and have him run the plate number for you.
