49 Comm; Rubber Valance below Rear bumper

Unknown
edited November -1 in HUDSON
I am calling it a valance, not sure what the right name is. What I am talking about is the rubber piece that goes the width of the car, just below the rear bumper and hides the underside of the car.

I have the material from restorations specialties and want to cut it to the appropriate size and attach to the bracket that bolts to the floor around the gas tank. Can someone please measure it and tell me the height of the actual rubber? I have never seen an original one, but can I assume the corners are rounded a bit at the bottom on either side?

A picture posting would be nice too.

Thanks

It's also cut out to clear the tail pipe. Unfortunatly I accidently threw mine away before measuring it. I did at least save the metal attachment bracket.

President of our chapter has a pattern which he made for his '49. I had enough left on my '51 to get height, end curve, and indentation where it fits over the exhaust pipe. On comparison, I believe his pattern is accurate. Will see if I can get, or take measurements on mine. I may also have a photo taken with the bumper off.

If you're doing all the under car rubber, there was also a piece under the master brake cylinder which most cars have lost. Walt-LA
  • Does anyone know what function the piece below the master cylinder

    would provide?

It's described as a weather guard in something I have- Suppose it was to protect the bellows or possibly cylinder from a build-up of ice or snow? Must have used a heavy piece of rubber, as it has to extend on its own. Only one side is attached. Looks as though it might have provided some protection from gravel. Walt-LA

Believe it is the piece described in parts manual, section R. p. 266 : Guard Assy-brake master cylinder. For LHD and RHD cars. 48-52 and selected 53's and 54's. Had enough left to copy on mine.
  • Thanks Sean & Walt. Any chance that someone has a picture of this part in its natural habitat?

If only the shop manual would show every piece that is in the master parts catalog...sigh.
